Gum is bad for your teeth and I didn't wanna rock those dreadful patches, my method is fullproof. I spend all of my money the moment I get it. No $ = no cigarettes. And thanks to the internet it's easier than ever to get rid of money. I've paid my phone bill up to February, bought a shit-ton of stock, I'm taking my niece to the movies and getting some tattoos tomorrow, completely random ways to get rid of money so that the opportunity never presents itself for me to purchase smokes. The best part is I'm buying services so it's not like my house is gonna get cluttered with things. I know it sounds obnoxious but I haven't had a cigarette in 3 weeks, that's the longest I've gone in 6 years. :gogirl:

Gurl.
Next time you wanna smoke do this. Exhale then inhale real fast. Bet you wont smoke again.

I smoked for 35 years.

I quit 2 years ago.

Cold turkey, just stopped.

I still feel like lighting up now....but no,...

It is hard, but possible.

Once you decide to stop, you will.

Hugs and stuff

Don

I spent a week on Oxygen.

They suggested that smoking could be deadly while I was on it.

I stopped then.

I hear that Chantix pill works well. Or other stop-smoking medication. That's how my grandma stopped and has been successful with it since last December. No cravings anymore either.

I smoke and like it realizing it is a negative habit to the wallet and health. I've quit in the past for various amounts of time. The longest was 2 yrs, and may go for a week or 3 often without a smoke.
How I look at it is like this I will always be a smoker. If I stop tomorrow and never smoke again I am still a smoker I just choose not to smoke now. It is my choice and I don't want one now maybe later? In fact I may not even buy a pack today or tomorrow, I can wait.
Other smokers I know take this approach where they are in control its not cold turkey stopping if you decide I can wait to have another cigarette and all of the sudden 5 yrs go buy. You may laugh because I write this and am smoking so it doesn't work but it does work because even if you can go a few weeks at a time deciding to wait for the next one. In my case drinking in social places where I smell it will always cause failure with other smokers nearby. I'm not ready to change that behavior so right now I choose to smoke.

Exercise did it for me. After trying to quit many times over many years, and after finding myself short of breath going upstairs etc.), I decided that every time I wanted a cigarette that I would run (walk, do situps, whatever) for ten minutes...and after that if I still wanted a cigarette I would have one. Within just a few days, I had quit for good. That was six years ago. Also, I learned from experience, that cigarettes are like potato chips, you can't have just one! My trap over the years was that I would quit for several weeks and then - at a party or with friends - think I could have just one. That one was always my downfall. Good luck.

I never smoked until I was 21. Then for kicks I thought I'd try one. So I did. And then I just didn't have any more. It all seemed pretty pointless to be honest. But I'm sure I read some bbc news report or something a couple of years ago that it affects you differently depending on your brain biology.

BTW, Karen Walker, I like your plan. Another good one is travelling to a remote island in northern Canada with no other people and nothing made of tobacco. Do you like backwoods survival camping?

I haven't even started, still a smoking virgin but everyone who is a smoker who hears that tells me to not start at all.

What's motivating ME to seriously work on quitting, is the fact that my regular brand(Newport) has gone up to $9.65 a pack. Haven't bought a back since last week. Not saying I'm done with 'em YET, but for me going a week is already a MAJOR accomplishment.

I can still get 'em fairly cheap at The Rez over here, but it's a 25 minute drive, I don't have my own transportation, and HATE asking people for rides or favors. So the limited access to cheaper cigs should help too.

Anyway, good luck with your struggle man. It's a bitch!!!

I rocked the dreadful patch. Actually, I rather liked it, it gave me very vivid and *ahem* interesting dreams if I left it on overnight. But it dealt with the nicotine craving while I dealt with the oral craving (ate a lot of Reese's Peanut Butter Cup minis). I also found that, when I was craving, if I drank a big glass of ice-water really fast, it went away. Plus my skin looked great, all the hydration. And that was twelve years ago.

Your plan wouldn't work for me. There's always some change in the couch, or a credit card with some room on it, and when that fails there are always people to bum off of. What keeps me off the cigs is the knowledge that if I feed the craving, it will get stronger, but it will get weaker if I starve it.

Loving this thread :)

My boyfriend has been smoking for 10 years, and I don't mind it at all. Its his choice, he did it before he met me, I'm not his mother, I can't make him stop.

Recently tough he did the math and found out that he spends around $400 a month on cigarettes. He made the decision himself to quit. He's doing pretty well actually (on Tuesday he only had 2 all day...down from an average 1 an hour), but this thread is perfect cuz I can borrow some of ur guys' strategies, and try and help him out :)

His first real test with it will be next week when he spends 4 days at my house helping me house sit for my parents. Not allowed to smoke inside.

So we'll see how it goes:)

Had a friend who smoked 1+ packs a day. He said the most important part of his stopping was drinking 8 large glasses of water a day. He felt so uncomfortable from the water he wasn't bothered by the tobacco cravings.

He said that after about five days the remaining tobacco cravings were more habit than addiction and he conquered them by keeping active.

Good luck - it's worth it.

/\

I quit using the patch, I was also stayed out of the bars where I did most of my drinking

Best of luck mate ..|

I've been quit now for over three years. I downloaded a program to my laptop (cannot remember it's name, sorry!) I input my details into the program I.E. how many I smoke each day and how much they cost. Then, each day I logged onto my laptop, the said program would tell me how many fags i'd NOT smoked and how much money i'd saved! I was a really great feeling to see the numbers mount up each day!

I also dowloaded plenty of pictures of diseased tar-ridden lungs for those super cravy moments!

ETA: I used no patches or gum, went completely cold turkey :)

I smoked for 30 years average 30 a day which is just about enough time for your body to start warning you very strongly that you gonna get very sick and die if you dont stop this sooner than later.

So - I bought some zyban (a schedule 5 mind altering anti-depressent) after consulting my doctor and proceeded to take the stuff. I stopped smoking after 4 days and i stopped taking the zyban after 6 weeks. I have not smoked now for more than 7 years, and dont ever intend to start again. I realize that i will still be addicted to one of the most addictive drugs on earth for the rest of my life. I also understand that i can control my addiction to nicotine completely by just saying NO! [-X everytime i feel like another one.

Yeah they say that nicotine and morphine are on a par in terms of addictiveness and much more difficult to give up than the more common and much less addictive cocaine, heroin, meth, dagga and the like. So if you manage to stop smoking nicotine, you can be very proud of yourself.
:=D:

It was all in the mind for me; I told myself that it was OKAY to get the rare craving, and that it wasn't something I had to fight or feel anxiety about. It's just a feeling that will pass, and nothing will change,

Anxiety is the root of addiction. Take care of that, and you'll be on your way to ACTUALLY quitting.

my mum tried a dozen or more times. a couple times wekids asked her to start up again as she became a royle nasty cunt

her last time was when she died. just had to have that butt
