I'm from the Northeast, so I have not met many gay Republicans. The only one I met was a closet evangelical Christian who I felt did not count since he was a bit crazy...

So for the gay Republicans on the forum how do you feel about gay rights?

Particularly:

- gay marriage

- civil unions

- gay adoption

- hate crimes against gay persons.

How does your view of gay rights differ from a Democrat?

Do you feel ostracized as a gay Republican from the gay community that's mostly liberal?

so wait you feel that gays can't say we are a happily married couple? Married is also a legal matter.. you can do it at city hall and it doesn't have to be religious.

You don't feel there should be hate crimes against gays or you hate the hate crimes? Example Bush vetoed alot of gay hate crime acts and laws.

Actually he didn't. He was never presented with an opportunity to actually veto one. He did always threaten to veto them, but they never passed a legislature when he was in office--neither in Texas when he was Governor nor in Congress when he was President.

When you really think about it, using the term hate crime is redundant - given that any crime may be classified as an act of hate.

I'm not really sure about the marriage thing. Still trying to figure out if its really supposed to be a process through a church and the government just decided to make it theirs or if marriage really is for anyone in any religion or absence thereof.

All for civil unions. Woot.

As for gay adoption, I think its awesome. I want children, or at least one so...What types of laws are out there for gay family adoptions? I don't really know anything about that. Not all up in my gay news i suppose.

I don't really know what you want me to say about hate crimes. Theyre bad? Thought it was a given...

My views pretty much coincide with those of a Democrat but just on this issue. I absolutely HATE it when people find out I'm a republican and theyre like "oh really? i just thought... oh hmm, that's interesting." omg it drives me crazy. especially this election. "you're voting mccain? oh, i just assumed you would vote obama..." Don't both obama and mccain not support gay marriage and both want to leave it to the states to decide?

I must addmit, I find gay people on the right in the states to be an interesting subject. Horrifying and very, very funny but interesting non-the-less. The reason it gets this reaction from me is because of just how far right the right actualy is in your country. Even the left in your country would be considered centre right by European standards, so to see gay people pitch thier flag with a party that, generaly speaking, fights tooth and nail to deny them thier rights is viewed by a lot of people on this side of the atlantic with a mixture of amusement and disgust. That's not to say the same phenomena does not exist in Europe. Just check our dear, late closet case and adolf admirer Jorg Hieder. What a total prick that man was.

I don't pitch my flag with the Republicans, nor do I regard them as the enemy. As far as I can see the Reublicans haven't denied my rights (marriage is not a right, that's bullshit) to do anything I wish to do.

Here in the south, or the bible belt if you prefer, the enemy is best personified as fundamentalists in general and southern Baptists in particular. True, they mostly vote Republican mostly because of single-issue politics, ie, abortion, but when you live in the south you learn to deal with that crap.

When you've lived for decades under the very real threat of problems with the fundies, Republican posturing and rhetoric seems kind of tame by comparison.

Yeah, marriage is actually a right, look up Loving v. Virginia, the S.C. went so far as to call it something like a "fundamental right" or some such.

So no Henry, the Reps didn't take it away from you, but neither will they let you have it (it's a plank on their platform after all), neither will some dems (a far less number - and there's no official discriminatory plank), neither will the religious nutcases who think God cares whose cock you suck.

The term "social conservative" has always bothered me. These people aren't conservatives by any definition of the word, and generally want some kind of truncated christian Sharia law forced down everyone else's throats.

Just because a court says it, doesn't make it so. Courts in England would have called the Americans anti-english, whereas in fact they were standing fast on ancient English/British rights.

The thing is that marriage is believed by an overwhelming majority of Americans to be a religious/sacred thing, so it ought to be jettisoned from government purview.

Gays can call themselves whatever they want. Call yourself an end table if you want. It's just semantics. What I'm saying is that marriage is a church entity...and civil union is what the county/state records and recognizes. It should be the same for gays and straights. Do whatever you want with regard to the church (or not at church if that's your preference)...and have it ratified by the govt. The problem is that the term marriage made it into the government definition of civil unions over time, and now it would be difficult to get rid of. Keep it a religious thing...that would benefit the churches, and those wishing to get married.

I hate that people commit violent crimes against one another. I hate if it's because the victim is gay. I'm not a big fan differentiating between crimes against gays and the same crime when the victim isn't targeted because they're gay. I was the victim of a violent crime. It had nothing to do with me being bisexual. It had to do with the guy being a crackhead in need of some money. I don't see how committing the crime based on some protected status makes it worse on the victim. But I'm not totally against labeling it a hate crime, I'm more indifferent.

And President Bush didn't veto any hate crime bills.
