How Do Gay Republicans Feel About Gay Rights...?

Re: How Do Gay Republicans Feel About Gay Rights..

Okay, so at least two gay/bisexual Republicans do not support gay marriage.

I find this curious...

I'm not gonna support anything from an institution that originally discriminated against homosexuality. It's their thing, they can have it for all i care.
Equal rights in civil unions is what really matters to me.

Re: How Do Gay Republicans Feel About Gay Rights..

Absent telepathy, one can only follow the written word.

The thread has nothing to do with ecconomics. The original posters questions were about how people like you deal with the authoritarian and frankly ludicrous social stances extolled by the party you all support. No telepathy required here, Henry, you were just takin' a smug, superior swipe at Europe, so please, don't piss on my back and tell me it's rainin' ;)

Re: How Do Gay Republicans Feel About Gay Rights..

- gay marriage

Totally support it as much as you far left types.

- civil unions

Not enough. Marriage.

- gay adoption

Duh

- hate crimes against gay persons.

Horrible and should be prosecuted.

How does your view of gay rights differ from a Democrat?

I'm more pro gay than most democrats!

Do you feel ostracized as a gay Republican from the gay community that's mostly liberal?

Sort of. But I don't care.

One thing you can't claim is that I'm antigay because I'm a conservative republican. I have teh same beliefs as the rest of you on gay rights and frankly most social issues... I am socially pretty liberal, pro choice, fine with pornography and obscene speech and blah blah blah.

I just happen to be conservative on everything else. I mean, foreign policy, economics, and law and order has NOTHIGN to do wtih being gay! ok!

Re: How Do Gay Republicans Feel About Gay Rights..

The term "social conservative" has always bothered me. These people aren't conservatives by any definition of the word, and generally want some kind of truncated christian Sharia law forced down everyone else's throats.

Aye man, very much with ye there, but I usualy find that although the terms "religio-facist bullshit merchant," and "social conservative," are completely interchangeable, it usualy causes me less grief to use the latter more often than the former.

Well fuck you then. (thought I'd give you a two for one with the pornography and the obscene speech).

No, seriously, you said civil unions are not enough...only gay marriage? What is the difference to you?

The "party you all support?" Now there's the laugh of the week, perhaps even the laugh of the month.

Speak for yourself. I don't support any of them, and have said so long and loud.

We in the USA have every right to feel smug and superior where Europe is concerned, given what's happening over there.

Re: How Do Gay Republicans Feel About Gay Rights..

What right have you got to feel smug at all? As far as global recession goes, you're in as much shit as the rest of us. Lets also consider the vast difference in social deprivation in yours, the richest country on earth, when compared to most nations in western europe, the gap between rich and poor etc. You've fuck all to feel smug about. Your country is an affront to human decency.

Re: How Do Gay Republicans Feel About Gay Rights..

When you really think about it, using the term hate crime is redundant - given that any crime may be classified as an act of hate.

Well, no, it's not redundant. There are some crimes that I cannot imagine ever being hate crimes. Prostitution cannot be a hate crime. Speeding cannot be a hate crime. Smoking marijuana cannot be a hate crime. Vehicular manslaughter cannot be a hate crime.

"Hate crime" has a distinct definition. It is a crime against a victim who is selected because of his association with a particular class of people. A crime against property can also be a hate crime if the property is selected because it is associated with someone or a group that is protected by the statute.

Examples: Painting a swastika on a synagogue would be a hate crime. Painting gang graffiti on the side of a 7-11 would not. Rolling a patron of a gay bar might be a hate crime if he was selected because he was likely gay; it wouldn't matter whether the victim were not actually gay. Rolling the same patron because he had flashed a wad of bills inside the bar would not be a hate crime.

So no, all crimes are not hate crimes.

Is that how you think gay Republicans feel about gay rights?:rolleyes:

Re: How Do Gay Republicans Feel About Gay Rights..

Just because a court says it, doesn't make it so.

Actually, yes, it does. Disobedience beyond this is treason, or revolution.

Re: How Do Gay Republicans Feel About Gay Rights..

The thing is that marriage is believed by an overwhelming majority of Americans to be a religious/sacred thing, so it ought to be jettisoned from government purview.

I'm not a nomenclature purist, so long as it's the same for everyone, everywhere, you could call it Sue for all I care.

Whoa! Your hammer and sickle is showing. Must have touched a sensitive nerve. LOL

I think a Freudian could make a very good case that all of the above mentioned crimes are in some way or another related to hate, even if it is self-hatred.

Besides, you're picking at nits.

Re: How Do Gay Republicans Feel About Gay Rights..

I'm not a big fan differentiating between crimes against gays and the same crime when the victim isn't targeted because they're gay. I was the victim of a violent crime. It had nothing to do with me being bisexual.

Yeah, been in barfights, been in fights where I was specifically targeted because I came out, they're different things. The level of menace is different, the intention of doing damage is different.

Self-hatred and Freudian analysis won't get a conviction.

I'm not picking at nits. I'm telling you the way most hate crime statutes read. They do vary somewhat, but that is the general thrust. Some statutes do not cover sexual orientation. The federal hate crimes bill that was introduced last session limited the definition to violent crimes against persons. However since I'm not picking at nits, the general definition above is adequate.

Glad to see you can be so flippant about the plight of poor folk in your country. Doubt you'd be so fuckin' smug if it was you that was you that was struggeling to feed yourself.

Yeah, I had to think about this, because I generally agree with you, but I can't really agree that my country is an affront to human decency.

The great irony of the US political situation is that a lot of the poor, vote against their own best interest. They've bought a bill of goods wrapped up in God and the flag and they defend to the death the policies - that they don't really understand - that keep them in the position they're in.
