Plenty of sites out there offering "free" ringtones from the music of my choice. But, they require giving the phone number. Can I make one on my own, or should I simply set aside my paranoia and just let them have my number?

You should be able to find ring tones free where you can just download them to your pc. Then just e-mail or text it to yourself from your pc as an attached file. Or transfer with a data cable.

I use Zedge for my android. that works well and you don't need to give a phone#

It's for an LG 840g. However, I have a shitty, as in problematic, current-model iMac, so it won't be easy (nothing is with this thing). I think if I can ever figure out how to chop a 30 second segment from an iTunes selection it'll work.

Download some free audio editing software for Mac, such as Wavepad or Audacity.

Edit your audio, save as MP3, then plug your phone into the iMac. Copy the edited files into the Audio folder on the phone's memory card. By default, your phone will only accept files under 300kb as ringtones, but you can change that here:

File Manager > Phone Memory > Audio > Options (upper right) > Sort By > choose Name, Date or Type

Repeat for Memory Card storage location as well.

If you're having problems with your current model iMac, it is presumably under warranty. Why not take it back?

In answer to your last question, your above response is why I am having so much trouble with my iMac. The layers of complication to do a simple task, any task, is beyond comprehension compared with Windows. Thanks for your response though, as it seems to be the only way and is nothing I could have figured out on my own, that's for sure.

Ok... let's make things so much easier...

Tell us what song/sound you're trying for, and more than likely someone here can either link you to it, or create it for you. :)

I don't understand the complication. The process is virtually identical on a Windows machine. Perhaps LG provide some kind of file management software for their phone on Windows, but it's hardly Apple's fault if LG choose not to support other platforms.

Not to belabor the point, but my issue with Macs is that they are billed as "They just work"; "Everything just makes sense and is intuitive"; "Macs are so easy to use"; "You will ask yourself why didn't switch sooner from Windows", and so on; my experience is just the opposite. Yes, it's my fault for buying into the hype and drinking the Kool-Aid. Having said all that, I expected making a ringtone with a Mac would be an easy endeavor, but clearly it's not.

Anyway, I've given up on the idea of a making a ringtone as it's not worth the hoop-jumping.

"MP3 Cutter and Ringtone Maker" from Android Tech, via Google Play.

It can list all the MP3 files on your android phone that you can access via the music player. Select one and make a selection using the vertical moveable guides which are the start and stop points in the clip of music you'd like. An icon on the top right enables you to save the selection, and further, it can assign it as your main ringtone, or to one of your contacts. Took a few seconds to download, and about half a minute to figure out, save and assign a ringtone. Absolutely free too.

All this is done on your phone, no need to upload/download via your dodgey iMac.
