How do you fall asleep.

I've always had trouble falling sleep ever since I was kid. When I was a kid I was bullied endlessly at school, so I always wanted to make the night last as long as possible before I had to wake up to the morning and face another day in school. So in simple terms as a kid I was scared of falling asleep because I know it would only be one more day of pain afterwards. Even now in my 20s I have trouble sleeping, not for same reasons as I did when I was a kid but none the less.

Anyways how I fall asleep at night and have been doing this for past 6 months, is I put on pandora and to set play some Slow or "sad" songs, most of them are acoustic based. I then close my eyes and imagine my self dying. Usually like a violent death, that Im slowly bleeding out, taking in my final sights and thoughts before I "die". Im not sure why I do this, but to me its something about the eternal rest of death that helps clear my mind and allows me drift off into sleep.

Which brings me to the thead topic, how do my fellow JUBs fall asleep.

I take psych meds that pretty much knock me out; I also take 10mgs of melatonin. No caffeine after noon, no TV for half an hour before bedtime, no food for two hours before bed.

You, sir, need to see a psychiatrist. And I don't mean that flippantly, you describe serious PTSD symptoms.
 
thread starter, the funny thing is that i too have had the same problem since i was a kid. i don't know why that was but i always had a hard time falling asleep in my own bed where i just couldn't sleep. i would often get paranoid that there was someone that was going to hurt me in my sleep such as a convicted murderer coming through my bedroom window to harm me. even when i closed my eyes hoping that i would just dooze off, i just couldn't fall asleep. it would just me closing my eyes completely aware of the sounds around me since my ears were always alert. i would run to my parents bedroom and huddle between them where i fell asleep when those feelings of fear overwhelmed me. funny how my sleeping issues sort of improved when i got older although me listening to music all night actually led to me staying up til 5 in the morning and sleeping until the afternoon. #-o

somethings that helps me is masturbation and not taking catnaps during the day. i used to take catnaps all the time back in jr high, high school and my first 3 years of college. after awhile, it was hard to fall asleep at night because i would sleep during the day.

I agree with Swellegant that it may be beneficial for you to talk to someone about this. At the same time, this sounds similar (though much more violent) to some meditation techniques that involve slowing your breathing and consciously relaxing every part of your body. You might try that instead.

As for me, sleep issues run in my family and I don't remember ever having a restful night. Crossword puzzles before bed sometimes help.
 
Usually a melatonin tablet seems to fill the need, and it's not often I lie awake. I have Ambien prescription in reserve, but I use them so rarely that I last filled the prescription about two years ago and I still have some.

I am extraordinarily thankful that I have somehow ENTIRELY AVOIDED stuff such as "political worries" from invading my go-to-sleep time. If I had that plaguing me, it would be extremely difficult to fall asleep.
 
I take Ambien and absolutely love it. I leave the tv channel on the Golden Girls, and drift off to that.
 
I can sleep anywhere anytime, like everything you do it all in your head.
PS if you can't sleep get up and read or watch TV, don't stay tossing about in bed.
 
Difficult. Even when I'm tired as hell, it's difficult for me to fall asleep. Usually I have to lie down for between 1-3 hours before the spells affect me. I fall asleep more easily during lectures/watching TV, but those two options are not available at night in my bedroom.
 
I do what any man does when he can't sleep *|* and so pathetic as it sounds if I have extra problems sleeping I hug my pillow or my stuffed bear and I sleep like a little children.

I knew I smelled ignorance and failure when I opened up this thread.

I can fall asleep in almost any position - even standing up...However I prefer the fetal position in my bedroom - no lights and the t.v. can either be on or off - it makes no difference in my ability to slumber. I'm a professional when it comes to that.
 
It's pretty effortless for me also, if I'm in a bed or lying on the couch. Oddly enough, the only place I have never been able to fall asleep is on an airplane, considering I spend close to half my life on one.
 
I don't have any problems falling to sleep. Just close my eyes, then the next thing I know it is morning.
