I notice that a lot of women either write a check or pay with a credit card for almost everything. Today, I saw a woman pay for a $1.49 cup of coffee by using a credit card.

I pay for groceries, gasoline, etc., with cash. What about you?

I generally keep cash on hand for anything less than $5. I feel weird paying with a credit card/debit card with anything less than that - the credit card fee (for the merchant) starts getting awfully large, percentage-wise, at that point.

Cash or plastic. I never write checks.

i'm a total debit card guy...except my barber of 20 years...he only accepts cash or checks. so, i write 1 check a month and a box lasts me so long that my imprinted d/l shows expired in 98 on them.

btw, did any miss me while i took a break? did anyone even notice?

Good for you! You are SO right. After the per transaction fees and percentage fees, merchants actually can lose a lot of money on smaller purchases being paid by plastic. Of course Visa and Mastercard have done a GREAT job of marketing and making people think it's cool, but the cost gets passed on to the consumer in the end in the form of higher prices. In addition, it is not allowed by Mastercard and Visa in their merchant agreement to have minimums since they get money every single time those cards are used. (Some businesses get away with posting minimums, but if they get caught they can lose their rights to accept them.) Keep using cash for small items. It is good for everyone invlolved. (Except Mastercard and Visa!)

I use cash for smaller transactions. It is actually easier and I can keep track of what I am spending on small amounts, which keeps me thinking about not throwing money around recklessly! Small amounts add up and it is surprising what it comes to, sometimes!

Cash or debit card. Got rid of the credit cards and the senseless debt and credit card company games that come with them. I kept one credit card and it's out of my wallet and locked in my safety deposit box at the bank for emergencies. If I can't afford to pay cash for something, I don't buy it. I'd rather save for it, pay for it and stay out of debt.

checks??????????

who takes cheques anymore?

I think most people still use checks to pay bills, even though on-line banking has really cut back the use of paper checks. Apart from bills, paying by check for groceries or ordinary expenses doesn't make sense anymore with the new laws. The check can now "instantly" be debited to your account as most banks and retailers don't want the "float" anymore. May as well use a debit card. It's easier than carrying around a checkbook and is accepted everywhere.

For groceries and anything under £100 cash, always. Debit card for over that value. Cheque for high value stuff where they don't take debit card. Credit card, won't have one. If I haven't got the money I don't buy it. I would feel a hypocrite if I used a card for low value items as I really hate the time it takes to process the things. Woman in front of me today paid for a pint of milk with a cheque which takes even longer as you have to use your card as a guarantee. I think she noticed that I was less than impressed.

I pay with cash or a debit card. Sometimes I have to write a check because debit cards are not accepted. I pay all bills by mail via check. When I order anything on line I pay by credit card.

Quite a number of stores, big and small, in the UK will not take cheques now. I only use cash for items less than £10 ($20). Debit card for the rest or credit card for large items.

Credit cards for everything above $5 so that I accumulate points for "free" stuff.

I am sure that it is just because you have observed more women than men buying things with credit cards, but seriously, does mentioning the gender really make a difference here???

I am a woman. I pay with whatever I have available. If I don't have cash I use my debit card. I don't write checks though.

My gender has nothing to do with the fact that I may not have cash in my wallet at any given moment. Sheesh. :D

At the Marina Waterside Ralphs, at least half (if not more) of the customers are men, but I never see them writing checks. OTOH, I've seen quite a few women writing checks there, and so there does seem to be a gender difference, even if you are an exception. I've also never seen men using coupons there, but I've seen quite a few women use them. The last time I was there, the woman in front of me did not even begin to start writing her check until the checker was finished. She could have filled out everything except the amount beforehand, but she didn't. Some express lanes supposedly will not accept checks, but I've seen women who over the limit items write checks there. It might be different in your neighborhood. I think the women in the Marina are shopping for more than groceries, since there are so many single men living here. Here's a story I wrote about shopping in the Marina.

I use a credit/debit card. It's a credit card that take money immediately from my checking account, but I sign a receipt instead of punch in a code. Otherwise I pay cash, especially for small amounts.

Cash for most transactions under $10, also when I'm out at the bars (hate the hassle of pre-pay with your card).
Debit card everything else.
All the bills paid online so I can't remember the last check I wrote, unless one counts when I transfer money from one institution to the other (better interest rate in the Money Market fund).

Credit Cards for pretty much everything...including transactions under $5. Just never carry any cash on me. Checks for bills.

Under $ 10.00 cash.

Over $ 10.00 credit card.

I always pay off the full amount on the cards each month.

I suspect you just see a lot more women buying groceries than men, but it's true I can't remember the last time i saw a man writing a check at the checkout.
