How Fucking Gay Was Freddie Mercury ?

Re: Happy 74th Birthday, Freddie Mercury!

Such a great loss. :(

Freddie's my all-time favourite male singer from any genre.

He was such an amazingly talented composer and lyricist, and a wonderful performer.

Re: Happy 74th Birthday, Freddie Mercury!

I saw a video on Youtube a few weeks ago in which Freddie was used as an example of someone whose accent was perfect RP (Received Pronunciation).

It was stated that few Brits these days speak RP unmodified by regional influences, and that the purest RP is spoken by foreigners.

Re: Happy 74th Birthday, Freddie Mercury!

Y'all just like him because he was gay, don't cha? Or is it because he was shirtless?

On a serious note, we keep clamoring for more A-list celebs and athletes and leaders who are out gay. We'll, Mr. Bulsara did the hard thing. He was himself and became the voice for a generation, and navigated a world much more repressive than today's for a would-be gay celeb.

He was said to have referred to himself as bisexual, allegedly in his obituary, but in the end, the question seems moot. He had a gay partner and didn't court women, apart from his lifelong friend whom he adored.

Although possibly for familial, cultural, and commercial reasons, he never actually came out. That said, he led gay men out by being over-the-top flamboyant and loudly proud of whatever he was. And the world got it.

That's a bit like the beacon that everyone needs, whether gay or loud or neither. He was himself proudly.

That should be celebrated.

Is the sentence still true if stopped there?

Isn't it becoming a thing of the past as Britain moves to a less class-based society?

I don't think RP is dying out at all. It's true that the BBC English of the 1950s is no longer a requirement for appearing on TV, but that's not to say that RP is becoming less common. I'm living proof of that.

Re: Happy 74th Birthday, Freddie Mercury!

I certainly wouldn't presume to know, but I'd surely like to see study or data set that details what percentage of Brits and foreigners use the received pronunciation, by age bracket.

And it would be nice to know what percentage of the total population RP constitutes, now and at the beginning of your queen's reign.

Apparently, it's somewhat of a hot topic in some of the press:

https://www.theguardian.com/science...-be-dying-out-but-its-passing-is-long-overdue

I have to admit, I tune out often if the regionalisms are too pronounced. It's like listening to Paddy Obrian in porn. That's what mute buttons were provided for.

This is the video I wrote about.
