Even back then was when it all began. He came out in 1982.

^ And even my mother knew long before that.

This is hardly "breaking news". :-)

But he was a great talent, and really one of a kind as a singer.

Fai-- wait, did BearMama actually make a thread worth reading? Sorta, you redeemed yourself with "It's Not For Me To Say."

Johnny Mathis did a good job of hiding it, when it wasn't cool to announce your sexual preferences.

That was how he sold millions of recordings (on vinyl records) for all those years.

And judging by how history has treated him thus far, being openly gay hasn't hurt him in his fans' eyes.

He seems to, in my opinion, keep an open, but low profile gay image. He doesn't go out of his way to be flamboyant.

'Misty' is my favorite by him.

Midway through it, as the instrumental bridge is ending, a note Johnny's holding starts fading in among the full orchestration until he begins singing again [Oooooon my own....]. It always sends chills up my spine.

I heard the effect was achieved by having Johnny walk into the studio while the orchestra was playing. I guess nowadays they just record his voice separately and software would help fade it in to the orchestral track (which probably wouldn't require a single real violin!) .

Times have changed.

As a kid, every time he showed up on TV, I remember my dad saying, "He's as queer as a three-dollar bill."

He was like Liberace. It was understood, but not discussed. They loved them for their entertainment. He had quite a voice and very nice timing. I always enjoyed his music. The orchestration is astounding on hi def stereos.

"Misty" is my favorite Johnny Mathis song too. I've loved it since it turned up on "Guiding Light" around 1980 (give or take a few years) when the story of Alan Spaulding and his ties to Amanda Wexler and Jane Marie Stafford were revealed...(yes, that is going back a few years, hehehe!):D

Damn! The boy was (sounded) sooooooooo sweet even back then #-o

So because his singing voice is naturally "High" that means he sound "sweet"? If that's how we judge people then I guess the "Bee-Gees" MUST be closeted Gays....Who knew?....;)

I had a very PG daydream one time which took place in 1955 or so, and starred him and Tab Hunter.

There was serenading and smooching.
