  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

How 'green' are you?

I've been recycling for over 20 yrs now.
Its the law and the city has given us
special recycle bins for paper, glass & plastic.
For us, its just the normal thing to do.
But I DO remember when I was a kid and my Dad used to burn our trash.
Back then, everyone burned their own.
We also used to burn our leaves in the fall.
Illegal now to do that.

gsdx, you are doing a great job of helping the planet. That's impressive!

We recycle our paper, plastic, and cans. We dispose of our batteries the proper way (not even sure what this means since Jason takes them on his way to work. We use loads of batteries though.) We've tried using fluorescent light bulbs but I don't like them so we switched back and we've tried using recy paper but it looks bad too.

I also recycle as you do gsdx. Up here we also purchase linen bags from grocery stores and put our groceries in them to save on plastic bags. Now when the clerk at the cash starts loading someone's grocery in plastic bags, you should here the customer yell, no,no, I have my own bags.

I have two heavy plastic 'shopping bags' and 3 stretchy mesh bags. They go with me every time I go out. The only time I get a bag from the store is if I buy something which won't fit into mine and is difficult to carry without it being in a bag. (Such as a dish drain tray and rack or a huge package of toilet paper. Oh, and I recycle those plastics, too.)

As long as I get a receipt for my purchases, I'm fine with it.

No. They don't. But they can hear glass or tins and plastic and things. If there's never a recycle box at that address, it's tagged and fines are issued. Recycling is mandatory around here.

So do they fine everyone in a aptarment/condo complex who uses communal dumpster?
I live in a single family home but all the homes share communal dumpsters scattered down the alley.
They are a bad problem because a lot of people drive down the alley and dump stuff they shouldn't, including the lawn mower men and small contractors who don't want to pay to haul it to the dump.
How can you enforce a penalty on people who are not responsible for the illegal dumping or failing to recycle?
This is a problem any business owner can relate to as they have dumpster misery too , behind there store/business people dump everything from gallons of used motor oil to old sofas.

I'm very green....

- i work from home

- i own an environmentally friendly business which helps other people live green. It turned 10 years old last year. :)

- i only seperate my greens from my other trash because the city I live n seperates it after they take it. They found that they are able to recycle more than 60% of it by doing it this way and people mess up the sorting anyways.

- i contribute and am a member of several environmental organizations

- i drive a hybrid

- i eat organic whenever possible

- some of my furniture is made out of environmentally friendly materials, including my bed frame, my mattresses, my sofa and chairs.

- i only own organic sheets, towels, and blankets.

- i try to minimize my water use.

- i'm a green party member

- i'm a vegetarian

I'm nowhere near as conscientious about it as you are, Neil, but I'm getting better. Since our Council provided us with three bins for our household rubbish collection (general rubbish, recyclables and 'green' waste bin) a few years ago, I make sure I use them properly.

I'll go ahead and say I'm not very green. At all. That's not to say I go out of my way to harm the environment, though.

first of all bigblock (472) yeahhhhh!!!

This is gonna sound weird but i am green in someplaces but others not

After every party we collected cans and bottles and from beer and bottles and turned them in for extra dollars (usually for my friends kids and sometimes beer money.

On the other hand I drive a gas guzzler and its my project (track car) and cant switch to a gas saver. That and my Durango (V8) .It broke my heart to hear that a law was signed regulating the avg mpg's for cars.

As for CFL's i got them cause they look cool :)

I:

  • Recycle everything.
  • Use energy saving bulbs
  • Conserve energy and water
  • Use biodegradable garbage bags
  • Walk everywhere
  • Rarely use a bag for purchases and if I do, I reuse it
  • Eat mostly organic, local food
  • Teach my kiddo about all of these things

At the newspaper (which is very wasteful, of course) we use both sides of every piece of paper that doesn't contain sensitive material and then recycle the used up pieces. We also use recycled paper in all of our printers.
