How have your musical tastes evolved over the years?

My tastes really haven't changed much over the years. In the 80's I was a fan of Culture Club, Oingo Boingo, Flock of Seagulls, The Cure, The Mission, etc. In the 90's I was all about alt music/grunge (Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Radiohead, etc), and now I still pretty much only listen to one radio station, the local adult alternative station. So have stayed pretty consistent though the years.

Have really never been a fan of any other genre's. Can't stand rap/hip hop/dance, top 40 pop gives me a headache, not a fan of country or classical either.

I think I was always fairly open-minded. Like most kids, I started with pop music, with a slight preference for rock and disco. In the 80s, I expanded out into the new wave and post-punk stuff. I began listening to jazz in the late 80s, and started getting into classical and college rock/alternative in the early 90s. I went back and learned some punk in the mid 90s, as well as going nuts for the early rock stuff. I think I started getting into world music near the end of the decade. In the past dozen years, I've been getting into early pop (1900-1950s), early country (up to about 1970), easy listening, and the local Colorado music scene. I now have large folders devoted to all these genres on my iPod, and choose whichever one strikes my fancy at any given time.

There are still genres I haven't investigated. I never really got into metal, or the real hardcore stuff. I'm not much a fan of bluegrass or folk, and I only like electronic dance in the most rudimentary way. And I never really felt much affinity for opera. But who knows - I may hear something that inspires me to delve deeper nto those categories one day.

God yes. And now that I look back I've compiled the best of all the groups, solo artists that I loved and ditched the "it seemed good at the time" ones.
Early years was influenced by my disco loving, hippy, surfer parents with the likes of ELO and Supertramp, Boney M, Chicago and Donna Summer. Then later my own tastes evolved with early Madonna (LUVED HER!), The Cure, Thompson Twins, Human League, New Order and Duran Duran. Come the 90's all that went to the wayside when I moved to the city and met the "cool kids". Then it was all about Lenny Kravitz, Soul II Soul, Bjork, Massive Attack, Soundgarden, Concrete Blonde, Jane's Addiction and Hole. And then came the Rave's Daze (the underground and still illegal kind where you had to call a 1800 number after 12pm to even find out where the destination was) it was all about DJ's Sasha and Digweed, Goa Trance, Apollo 440, The Crystal Method, The Future Sound of London, Hybrid, Lamb and The Orb.

Today I spend little time listening to new music. It's a bit of all of it. Old The Smiths/Morrissey, The Cure, Boards of Canada, Enigma, David Gray, Mark Ronson and Roisin Murphy.

Phew, sorry for the rant but I loves me music.

I started with rock and roll (yes I'm an OLD FART) some folk music, soul and DISCO. I love dance music - always have and always will since I love to dance.

I wouldn't say it evolved very much. I would say it became more diverse. For example, I didn't use to listen to movie OSTs because they have that kind of atmosphere I don't like, but lately I'm a bit more open when the music deals with atonality and dissonance (two of my favourite things in music).
