Pope Francis very deliberately bitch-slapped Donald Trump verbally today as he flew away from Mexico.

The popes weren't shy about condemning rulers, but this is a first for recent times.

Of course, The Donald just played the victim again. No publicity is bad publicity apparently, and we can already see he knows no shame.

Yeah, this is remarkable. Popes over the last couple hundred years have shied away from direct criticism of political leaders themselves. When John Paul II condemned GWB's invasion of Iraq, he condemned the invasion, not Bush himself. Francis went after Trump personally, saying nobody who held beliefs such as Trump has expressed can be called a Christian.

When asked by a reporter, "Can a good Catholic vote for this man?" Francis responded by saying... "...a person who thinks only about building walls, wherever they may be, and not building bridges, is not Christian. This is not in the gospel. As far as what you said about whether I would advise to vote or not to vote, I am not going to get involved in that. I say only that this man is not Christian if he said things like that. We must see if he said things in that way and in this I give the benefit of the doubt."

-Pope Francis, speaking of Donald Trump

It would be quite easy to extrapolate Francis' statement to most of the Republican candidates for president, however, since most of them want to build a bigger wall along the Mexican border.

I think the Pope and Trump should take their act on the road. They both take themselves more seriously than does anyone else.

Though I like the Pope, the head of the Roman Catholic Church accusing someone else of being unchristian-like is quite the joke.

I would assume from the Pope's comment that the Vatican is open to the public and all that wish to set up camp there are free to do so.

To be fair, his real estate isn't exactly Vicars Without Borders:

On the other hand, one of his chief titles IS Pontifex Maximus.

Despite its fortress nature in the past, the Vatican can hardly be described as selective or unwelcoming. Considering that past popes actually entered into wars before, it is no surprise to find it a walled city. It was besieged as recently as the 19th century during Italy's civil war.

As if the American Latino population NEEDED more reason to run from the GOP. This is the 4th presidential election in a row where the GOP has shot itself in the foot, ignoring demographics and happily tossing the possibility of gaining Latino votes. Stellar trend here.

Not only was the Vatican built as a walled fortress, but the Sistine Chapel has crenelations for the protection of archers.

Moreover, the Passetto di Borgo was built in 1277 as an escape route for popes to retreat to the Castel Sant'Angelo when the Vatican's defenses were breached.

A lot of people do not understand the meaning of Trumps campaign. He has essentially said that the GOP can either reconcile the problems it created for the country or stand to lose another election. Trump believes the establishment GOP will never reconcile their past mistakes when it comes to things like Iraq and holding the country hostage on the debt ceiling, but now hes given them a choice. They can either go along with his campaign or admit they have no clue on how to govern.
The mistakes opponents of Donald trump are making are incredibly selfish. The words of a politician should never be beleived, and many refuse to see the real impact that Donald Trump is having on national politics, and how he has essentially said the GOP must change or we are better off having a Democrat win in november.

I am continually astonished at people who are against Trump and his message simply because its popular to demonize people who tell the truth, and fail to see the broader context of his campaign.

Except that people do NOT demonize Trump "merely" for telling the "truth." Rational hearers of Donald Trump hear over and over again statements that defy both critical thinking, and truth. In fact, they even descend into crude personal attacks, sexist slurs, and demeaning remarks that are the earmarks of a candidate whose message isn't sufficient to sell his candidacy. And the only reason he yet endures is that he is swimming in the GOP lane, not competing for office in the general election.

A fair listing of his "truth" would by necessity be dominated by repeated statements of desperation, more typical of some raging ego portraying an antichrist or other actual demon. In truth, those tropes in cinema probably evolved from the familiar excesses of the aristocracy and the oversized egos that privilege engenders.

Behold the "truth":

Politifact records Trump as telling lies on at least three out of four of 77 statements on the campaign trail.

And be sure, the lowering of the debate has served not only to reveal Mr. Trump's in ability to gain consensus among a coalition, but it has effectively made the Democrats looks great by mere comparison. There is nothing so banal as a party that destroys itself from within.

I agrees with this.
Who cares about the popes views anyway. He is not qualified to say anything non-religious.

Remember that the problem of Latino poverty and the pressure to invade the US is largely the result of the Church's evil prohibition of contraception. Having created vast poverty, the Pope thinks the solution is to invade the US and take jobs from Americans, including hispanic and black Americans. The Pope will eventually be forced to abandon the prohibition, admitting that he is wrong on a moral question. He will say he never invoked his "infallibility" on the question, but being forced to back down on a moral question discredits the whole theory of infallibility.

Oh please, shut up.

Like his hate of gay people is that what you mean. He is not the Pope Ratzinger is he will be soon gne and another stooge will be chosen. He nothing more than the PR Pope.

I does agrees wit this.

It's manifestly obvious to even the simple-minded that 1/3 of the world's population is Christian. Fully half of them are Catholic. Your dismissal, as always, represents only your wish that religion is relegated to impotence. By your standard, your Dawkins should know nothing about religion and should only comment on science. See how that works?

Will he also wear a hula skirt and wear coconut halves for a bra? If you get to create a straw man pope to dance to your propositional theories, why stop with mere assumed political reversals? Have him snort and oink, as your preposition is exactly that preposterous and meaningless.

And infallibility is a doctrine, flawed as it is, that applies in papal rulings and dogma, not simple opinions expressed as this was. Total red herring, likely representing one of the few actual facts you know of the papacy.

As for poverty and populations, your model assumes not overpopulation and poverty occur outside Catholic realms and that it would not occur in Latin America without the religion. That breaks down quickly when skipping over to Africa, India, Polynesia, and East Asia. Nice try. Unfortunately, another fail.

Like his hate of gay people is that what you mean. He is not the Pope Ratzinger is he will be soon gne and another stooge will be chosen. He nothing more than the PR Pope.

Your standard for hate is very low indeed. The US military hated women because they never allowed them to be equals by your logic, yet they were all married to women and certainly loved them. Discrimination is discrimination, but hate is hate. The two are not equal. The pope's dogma has not reversed the Jewish taboo of anti-homosexuality that Christianity has promulgated, but the pope has actually begun building a limited bridge to gays by how he had discussed it. The entire world credits his efforts in his own bridge building. The fact that the bridge hasn't extended to full acceptance of gays does not make him a hater of us, only a leader who hasn't accepted us fully. There is a difference.

I mean, they're all evil. The pope is an asshole, trump is an asshole, Cruz is an asshole.

If that is true, Pope Francis is the most popular asshole on the planet. Trump, not so much.
