That song was always Dolly's, no matter how many times Whitney belted it. It's just more suited for a restrained, reflected performance.

I think it's unfair to say that Whitney OWNS the song just because she delivers a better vocal than Dolly. Dolly is one of the best songwriters of all time; without her Whitney wouldn't ever have the chance to "own" that song anyways.

Not so much unfair. It just is what it is. Everyone in the world knows NOBODY else can touch "I Will Always Love You" after what Whitney Houston did with it and possibly do it any better.

Whitney owns that song. She can't go anywhere in this world without people having her sing it for them. Dolly herself said it. She knows that song BELONGS to Whitney now. It'll always be Dolly's creation (she's a genius and awesome songwriter) , but its Whitney's standard in the world's eyes. And its THAT one song that the world knows in every country, language, culture, whatever. That's Whitney's song. And every singer knows that song is untouchable because of Whitney Houston.

Just because Whitney's version is technically better, it doesn't mean that Dolly's version isn't more emotional and covers a much wider spectrum of feelings. Whitney doesn't bring the bittersweetness of the song to the table, but by all means, I won't stop you from liking her version better.

Whitney's version has had way more success and gave the song popularity. I bet the only reason why people knew that dolly parton sung i will always love you was because they heard the whitney version and looked back at the history of the song and said " o dolly wrote and sang that song." Just like George Benson's greatest love of all. He wrote it and sung it but it is known as whitney's song.


Both should credit for the song though.

That's actually my all time favorite song. Dolly had that song hit number one on the charts from two different albums. I still almost cry when I listen to it. I actually don't care for Whitney's version myself.

She's sang this song FLAWLESSLY countless of times.

Leona Lewis and Leann will NEVER f*ck with any of these performances vocally. Not in their wildest dreams. Not in this lifetime.

No comparison whatsoever! Her voice is soooo WEAK, AIRY and EMPTY compared to Whitney's. She doesn't have any fullness or power in her voice, whatsoever. And lacks any real genuine feelings or emotion behind it. And her TONE and CLARITY could never come close to the beauty in Whitney's voice. Her VOCAL ACROBATICS, her INFLECTIONS and her AGILITY is soooo limited as well and could never come close to competing with Whitney's masterful skills & techniques. Whitney sounds like the PRO teacher here in these performances and Leona sounds like the young student she is who's trying her best. She could NEVER IN HER WILLLLLLDEST DREAMS match Whitney Houston's voice in these clips (and these performances aren't even her at her PEAK, vocally!) -- or could she ever come anywhere close to it. Y'all are REALLY trippin up in here!

Oh well. Made for a good laugh anyways.

As for Leann and Leona being dolled up...I remember when Whitney was dolled up until she became a junkie. Them being pretty doesn't take away their talent. Whitney was gorgeous too. Do they have soul? I don't know...but they deliver this song perfectly live and don't down crack or break down the song.

I haven't heard Leann's version, but Leona? Laughable. I really don't get what the big deal is about her voice. I always preferred Live Whitney to Recorded Whitney even when the live version isn't as flawless. RW always seemed to be holding something back. Since Kev already posted all those IWALY clips, I'll post one my one my favorites.

LMFAO. Dude, are you serious? You lose. You can't even be taken seriously. Leona's voice comes nowhere near close to Whitney Houston's voice in ANY of those performances. No matter what you think, what your personal taste is, or however way you try to spin it (one little crack or no crack). Whitney still wiped the floor with Leona vocally, bigtime.

Whitney sounds like the PRO teacher in these performances. Leona sounds like a weak, soft, nervous and airy karaoke ripoff . There's NO comparison vocally. You can PREFER Leona's performance all you want, but she comes nowhere close vocally and technically.
