How "I Will Always Love You" SHOULD sound

FLAWLESS:

No one tops this. She even sings OPERA in the beginning! Can airy voice Leona do THAT? !oops!

:rotflmao:

I haven't heard Leann's version, but Leona? Laughable. I really don't get what the big deal is about her voice. I always preferred Live Whitney to Recorded Whitney even when the live version isn't as flawless. RW always seemed to be holding something back. Since Kev already posted all those IWALY clips, I'll post one my one my favorites.

Right. Leona's voice is weak, airy and empty. She leaves you with an empty feeling when she's done. She just doesn't have a voice that bangs. No fullness, no power. Nice little tone on her, but very weak and airy. And she's very limited on her vocal abilities.

Again -- there's no way in HELL Leona could ever f*ck with this:

Whitney OWNS for life. !oops!

Those videos don't belong on this thread. ](*,)They have nothing to do with the subject:

How "I Will Always Love You" SHOULD sound

It's apples and oranges. You can't really compare Whitney and Dolly's versions.
Dolly's sounds more heartfelt and melodic, but Whitney's sounds more Sensuous and Strong.

L.M.F.A.O!!! :rotflmao:

What in the hell? Its a bunch of clueless LOONIES running all through this thread. Y'all have GOT to be kididng me if you think ANY of those ladies EVER performed this song better vocally than Whitney Houston ever has!

And she would always "crack" and "break it up" when she sang it? And never sang it better than the recorded version? Are you kidding me right now? You obviously know NOTHING about Whitney's history with performing this song LIVE. You're a joke, and can't even be taken too seriously anymore after that one. !oops!

She's sang this song FLAWLESSLY countless of times.

A few quick examples...Watch each one of them... (and I suggest you turn your volume up):

Leona Lewis and Leann will NEVER f*ck with any of these performances vocally. Not in their wildest dreams. Not in this lifetime.

Now on to Leona's version... ()

No comparison whatsoever! Her voice is soooo WEAK, AIRY and EMPTY compared to Whitney's. She doesn't have any fullness or power in her voice, whatsoever. And lacks any real genuine feelings or emotion behind it. And her TONE and CLARITY could never come close to the beauty in Whitney's voice. Her VOCAL ACROBATICS, her INFLECTIONS and her AGILITY is soooo limited as well and could never come close to competing with Whitney's masterful skills & techniques. Whitney sounds like the PRO teacher here in these performances and Leona sounds like the young student she is who's trying her best. She could NEVER IN HER WILLLLLLDEST DREAMS match Whitney Houston's voice in these clips (and these performances aren't even her at her PEAK, vocally!) -- or could she ever come anywhere close to it. Y'all are REALLY trippin up in here! :rotflmao:

Oh well. Made for a good laugh anyways.

I never said Leona Lewis was better than Whitney, just to clarify.

I just thought that she deserved a mention since her version of the song - which was performed in her early days on the X Factor - is not a BAD performance at all. It was the performance that made me take notice of her in the competition.

Whitney's version will always be my favourite version, there is no doubt about that.

But Leona Lewis has improved majorly since her time on the X Factor and I would like to hear her sing this song again - maybe not now, because she is still trying to prove herself to be a relevant artist, but in the future I would definitely want to hear her try this song again.

I'm starting to see how the lambs were feeling... look, we weren't "attacking" Whitney, nor were we calling her version bad. We just voiced our opinions about other live versions, and how they are worse/better. Chill, dude; no reason to come down on us as if we worshiped Kim Jong Il when we said we PREFERRED another version.

Dolly does put more emotion and attachment to the song. I love her rendition. Without her, there would be no IWALY, which EVERYONE knows.

Whitney does arguably the best vocal of a song, ever.

I'm not too familiar with country music so Whitney Houston's version was the first one I heard. That lead me to the original by Dolly Parton.

Once I heard it I really became enamored with the song. IMHO Dolly's is THE version.

Thanks to RestlessDevil for the inspiration:

I actually just listened to this version - I didn't bother before because I was ignorant and thought that nothing could top Whitney's version.

But, I like it. Not more or less than Whitney's version. Because they are performed completely differently I find that I can enjoy them both without comparison. :D:wave:

I like both Dolly's and Whitney's versions of the song, they both made it their own and both should be considered classics. As for Leona she was singing the song because she could, but there was no "soul" behind it Whitney and Dolly seemed to tap into something frm within to record/sing a great song..I don't think Leona will be able to pull it off until she can experience the song herself.

Agreed. ..|

Whitney does arguably the best vocal of a song, ever.

Amen!

Stop Fighting...this is how "I Have Nothing" and "I Will Always Love You" should sound LIVE:

(!)Ladies and Gentlemen, the newest DIVA, Miss Charice Pempengco!!!(!)

Charice doesn't just sings cover songs...she owns them after singing them. Watch how she gives Beyonce a run for her money when she sings "Listen" during a rehearsal in Italy:

(!)BRAVO(!)

Thanks for posting that second vid. Turn the volume up and hear it again. Flawless? Her voice cracks and she breaks the song. She sounds weak in it. I didn't bother watching the other vids though. I've heard this song way too many times.

Here's another example:

I much prefer Leona's version it may seem to some as "airy" but she has her own style and voice. She's not imitating her. She's doing her own thing...but that's just my opinion. ;)

Yup, Whitney never had a flawless performance live. Yes, her recorded versions are the best, but her live performances have always been very dissapointing even during the peak of her career. Leona, on the other hand, sings so much better live.

Wow! The amount of fanaticism and pure nonsense in this thread is astounding. Oh well...Mariah, Madonna, Whitney and Mary J. Blige's fans are the worst. Jeez!

Actually, I must insist that Maria Callas' version was vastly superior to any of these pop-music tarts'!

*ducks* OPERA QUEEN CAT-FIGHT!!!!

FLAWLESS:

:rotflmao:

She sings "opera," but not really well.

Laugh all you want. One of the things that makes a great standard a great standard -- and I would argue that IWALY reaches that status -- is that it invites interpretation, at the same time it kind of sings itself. To me, it's just silly to say that anyone "owns" a song like this (beyond the fact that Dolly collects royalties every time anyone performs it).

I listened to Dolly, Leona, the clip above, and the 1994 Whitney "live" version.

The thing that really grabs me about the Dolly version (besides being reminded that Porter Waggoner was a huge freak of nature and that Dolly looked prettier when she weighed a little more) was how effortlessly the music flowed from Dolly. To me, that's magic. She doesn't try to take it any further than what she can do -- like OP said, it's even a little restrained, which I think makes it very impressive.

Yes, Leona starts out a little breathy, but she finishes with fullness, confidence, and power, AND she hits all the notes right! I said that IWALY is a song that "sings itself;" it's also a song that is easy to listen to (yeah Dolly!). It really only sings itself, though, if the performer has the pipes. Not everyone does. Leona made me learn forward and listen, and I got those little goose-bumps. I enjoyed it. The contrast between the beginning and the end of the song is, I think, the mark of an interesting interpretation. She's got nothing to be ashamed of.

The sound quality of the recordings in both of the Whitney versions that I listened to was poor, but it was good enough to hear a couple of things. Elvin pointed out that she "breaks," and I'm not sure that's what I heard (although I think I did in the 1994 stadium version). What I DID hear, though, is that in both of them, she really isn't exactly hitting all the notes. Especially in the unaccompanied intro to the "opera" version, she is either building some minor chords that aren't really related to either of the keys she's going to be singing in later in the song, or, she's just flat/not finding the note. In both of the versions, while she is accompanied, she is "off" enough to detect more than once, and in the 1994 stadium version, she is clearly straining to project the higher notes before she gets into her "head voice". So, anyone can call these versions "the greatest" or "unmatchable," and I can't really argue with taste, but what I can say with confidence is that it is not flawless. Sorry. It's just not.

And I love Whitney Houston and I love her version of the song. If you've got the pipes, the song sings itself, but filling up big halls/big stadiums takes a lot of work, and I wouldn't really expect anyone to be flawless.

...the first time I ever saw anything like a drag show was in the mid '90's at the Cabana Inn in Oklahoma City. As a matter of fact, I'm pretty sure it was April 4, 1994, because on the next leg of the trip, the day after, I heard that Kurt Cobain had died. Anyway, it wasn't really a drag show per se, but it was either a karaoke or a lip-synching night. I kind of think it was a lip-synching night, because I can't imagine that either of the two people I saw presenting the song were actually singing it. A drag queen was MCing. This guy -- I remember him as in jeans and western boots and a western shirt, although with a little more "preppy" than a "country" look -- did IWALY, and as soon as he was done, the drag queen MC came to center stage and took the song from the "key-up" spot, selling it for all she was worth. It was clearly her song, and the hapless quasi-cowboy clearly hadn't realized that, because when the MC was finished, the cowboy bowed and scraped and bowed and handed over numerous dollar bills. In that ahll that night, she "owned" IWALY.

I thought it was funny as hell.

PERFECTION:

But LMAO @ the crazy dude in the audience yelling out. :rotflmao:

INCREDIBLE:

She sang the hell out of it!!! And the audience was going NUTS. Worshiping the queen. :=D:

Whitney Houston OWNS for life. (!):gogirl:
