May not have been that important on your card, but you should check your GPU temp just to be sure. on my card however the fan is absolutely essential.

You need the FAN if it's OEM - asking for trouble otherwise

well depends on what you are doing. if you are just using it in desktop mode (no 3d acceleration) you might be fine without fan. however you really should check the GPU temp with some kind of monitoring program (like motherboard monitor or so). if it occasionally gets too hot - you can still try to install another fan (powered over the mainboard) or just a heatsink.

try and get a replacement fan would be a good idea because if you push the video card you are likely to burn it out, if it was a second hand video card it may have only required a clean or a new fan mines a bitch too but cleaning or replacing it helps

Strikes me a bad move, especially if you are running different video apps simultaneously [especially like you seem to - photo editing, watching DVDs]. The fact the fan is kicking in means that the video cards processor is getting hot. By removing it, the life of your video card will be seriously compromised. If you're not a gamer [who tend to hammer their video cards] you may get away with it, but, the cards life may still be a lot less than normal.

I have the following installed in my PC and it's silent but does have a fan attached. Even when watching High Definition video or running videos in QT, WMP & Real Player simultaneously or on my 22" Samsung 226BW Widescreen monitor it can't be heard in the background.

EVGA e-GeForce 8600GT Superclocked 256MB running on the following configuration:
