It depends on the seriousness of the relationship, I would imagine. I doubt very much you would be ready to see other people right away if the relationship was one of deep love for each other.

Just for date and sex, about 3-7 days or mourning is reasonable before you get back on the horse, then 3-6 months of good old fashioned fun, before looking for anything more serious. Dont get sucking into another serious relationship to quickly as it does not work.

My first post break up task is renew the dating profile, prove you are back in the game, and moving on.

Baby you are grieving if it was a deep and long-term relationship. Don't allow yourself to get caught up in rebound sex/dating. You will feel cheap and dirty and not in a GOOD way ; ) Seriously, it is TOTALLY up to YOU as to when you feel ready to get back on the horse and ride. When you are ready then take a deep breath and dive back in. It is okay to "dog paddle" in the shallow end until you are feeling safe enough to plunge into the deep end again (no pun intended... okay maybe it was) if you want. Only you know when it is right. Hey, thanks everyone. I appreciate the your insight and humor. The relationship lasted 15+ yrs, so it's been devastating, but everyday I'm a little bit better. I'm going to take a few months, probably six, to regroup, then hopefully 2012 will bring a new love, we'll see.

For a longer term relationship, it takes anywhere from six months to a full year to come to terms with it and deal with it fully.

I'm sorry to hear the news. I've often thought of this question, if only to protect my friends from rushing in too soon, and even tried to come up with some kind of formula.

For a while I thought: 2 months for every year. (And maybe not before you could see someone at all, just before you'd be ready to think seriously about it.)

Now, I don't know. I think it depends on the circumstances of the relationship, of the break-up, of the new person you might meet.
