  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

How long does it take to read a book?

Too many factors play a role in how fast I can read the material: writing style, topics, how large the material, available time for reading etc.. For example fluff books like Harry Potter can take a night or two to finish, but reading John Rawls' A Theory of Justice will slow me down for many weeks because of his difficult academic writing style and subject matter itself.

It really depends, I am still a student and thus spend a lot of my time reading. Typically if its an academic book, I want to get it read in about a week so I can return it to its owner/library. Getting like this has improved my speed for sure, but its somewhat killed my enjoyment of reading and now when I read I just feel like I have to get to the end and forget to enjoy. It is also the case that I read a lot more on screens which again has sped me up a lot to the point where I have read books in 24 hour slogs on my laptop - I read Lords Of Chaos: The Bloody Rise of the Satanic Metal Underground at that speed last weekend and its 404 pages long.
