I consider myself very lucky in this respect - close friends that I could depend on in a crisis approx 15, people that I hang out with and would happy to invite to a party 50+

Know loads of other people but they are much more acquaintances rather than actual friends.

I think there is a distinction between real friends and acquaintances, people I know, bar friends, etc...

As far as real and true friends that I have known for years and we would do anything for each other, probably about 6 or 7. As for acquaintances and others, probably about 200-300 or more. I know tons of people but very few are REAL friends, in the truest sense of the word.

I had to think about this and then wonder about the definition of friend because I have lived in so many places and met so many people. So I defined friend as someone I have known well, got on with and who I would always be happy to see and who would be happy to see me, then I lost count!

Goodness! I wouldn't be able to remember all their names let alone their faces.

I certainly couldn't afford all the china or find a table large enough to invite them all for dinner.

In my humble opinion it is possible to have around 5 people who can be considered friends in the true sense of the term. If you start adding more you are incapable of sharing yourself with them and they become just people you know (acquaintences is an acceptable term).

You can be on friendly terms with every single person that you meet but does that make them a "friend"?

So to answer the question according to my reasoning I admit to three friends.

two really really close friends i love to death one being my boyfriend. about 10 or so really good friends. and a good number of mates i like and like hanging out with and wouldn't want to be without, but we're not as close

3 really, really good friends, these are the people that know pretty much everythign about me, and whom I could count upon in an emergency.

As far as friends go, the ones who I know on a casual basis, and stil hang out with from time to time, maybe around 8-10 or so.

Then there are the aquaintences. I really don't know how many of those I know.
