I always liked the idea that one of my professors had, and then I read about later in a novel. We each get a license to "replace" ourselves in this world--those who would like more children can buy a license off of those of us who don't wish to use ours. If someone who has sold his license later wants to have a child, he/she must then purchase a license from someone who does not want his.

Could work........what about couples? Man and woman have 2 kids?

Yup, a couple could have two kids, based on the license each brings to the relationship. If they want 18 kids, like the woman discussed above, they would have to purchase licenses from others who wanted to sell.

I chose "2" - a replacement for each person.

But as far as breeding goes, I think one should have a license to procreate.

Having kids is a lot like driving - some just shouldn't be behind the wheel.

They should adopt...and not in a cheap "send Starbucks money to sponsor poor kids that would've been better off if the missionaries hadn't invaded in the first place" sorta way

but in a totally legal orphane Ang-E needs a home way.

There needs to be a lifegaurd in the gene pool

First of all, since we're talking about liscences per 2 kids, I HOPE that this system involves a REQUIRED background check AND aptitude test before issuing even one liscence.

Nope. The license would be one you are given upon birth. The idea would be that you have a right to replace yourself on this planet--reproductive freedom coupled with a sense of responsibility to your society.

People should only have children if they have the means to raise them. And I don't mean monetarily.

Thus, my answer....I was assuming by 'as many as they can support' you were talking emotionally...not just feeding and keeping clothes on their backs.

I know a couple of guys (gay couple) who have 5 kids. They live in a big house in the Anex, are both professionals and both work from home (mostly). Their 5 kids all seem healthy, happy and unusually well adjusted. I'd assume their dads could easily afford to put all 5 of them through university (They are just kids at this point) , pay for hockey, piano lessons...whatever.

Personally I'd eventually like to have two or three kids.

I do however, have an opinion on WHO should be having children.

none....they should all go to fucking parent school first.

Having kids is a lot like driving - some just shouldn't be behind the wheel.

I agree with the sentiments expressed by the above. It is not a matter of quantity but one of quality. I see examples every day of parents who are simply not fit to be having and raising children, and the children show it.

I'm looking at this strictly from my own viewpoint.

I believe that as long as you are able to support and properly raise them, you should have as many children as you want.

I have known families where the money is tight and they have six children. Yes, they struggle, and they don't have all the luxuries, but there is a lot of love. Somehow, they manage to make it work.

I have also seen one-child families where the child has been given every opportunity, luxury and had every whim catered to. That child became so self-centered, that she was incapable of understanding what it is to show empathy for others.

I don't think there is any one set number people should have, (unless you follow the logical Chinese edict of 2).

I don't think every person is capable of being a good parent.

I do believe that parenting should be a required training before the baby is born.

Just my own probably flawed, imperect opinion.....

As long as they can support them, I see no problem. The only thing I have a problem with are those 6+ multiple births...I have a feeling those are mostly just for the media attention than anything else. That, and all the free stuff/help they get.

Why isn't there an option for "none?"

I think a good 10 years of no new kids would do a world of good. Literally.

I can't wait til the free market gets a hold of this. We allow each couple one child when you marry or otherwise make your marriage legal. If you have a child out of a marriage, then you either get married/civilly unioned or you don't get any tax deductions for your children.

If you have additional children then there is a progressive tax. So have more, but your going to pay.

Then allow people to sell and buy their child credits. If you sell it, you can't have a kid, if you want more, you can buy the credit. When you sell your credit, then you agree to sterilization or some sort of birth control implant (we need one for the men too!).

The Republicans would be proud!

But seriously at what point is someone going to tell the Catholic church that having babies isn't the way to grow your church. We need to do something - this is the elephant on the planet that no one seems to be willing to address. Africa needs to take a leadership role.

^ I saw that series.

Honestly, close your legs. well, not yours

But have you seen how brainwashed the whole family is??!!

Like it or not. We live in a democracy. Taking away the right to have children would never hold up in a court of law. Yes the planet is over populated. When we start to run out of food the problem will fix itself. We will either start to address the situation and find ways to adjust to the problem (ie growing food faster or gentically modifying the food supply or expanding into space. Or we fall into a famine and it's survival of the fit. Either way mother nature will fix the problem in due time. Besides this means nothing with World War 3 and nukes just around the corner! :)
