It becomes difficult to assume a so-called redneck will be homophobic or otherwise bigoted when, in fact, that redneck is himself gay.

Over the course of my life I've met a number of people who could be termed rednecks, but who also turned out to be no more prejudiced or narrow minded than some of the college intellectuals I knew. All this is to say that a person's character all boils down to that individual, not some class or category others in society choose to lump him in.
