Attention How many of you have switched to Windows 10?

I have read so many bad reviews about Windows 10, so no i will stick to Windows 8.1.

I do however keep getting prompts to upgrade to 10.

Sticking with 8.1 as well, suits me fine.

My desktop is five years old, so I am getting to the point where I will update the whole system soon.
I have LOVED Windows 7 (I bought this machine just after 7 came out).
I can't see the wisdom on updating to Windows 10 until I get a new machine.
If it isn't broke, why mess with it?

I turned off the automatic update and update reminder over a year ago, maybe two years ago. I'm using Windows 7 and very content with it. Don't see any reason to change.

8.1 here. When I got this box, it came with 8. I absolutely hate the start screen/tiles. First thing I did was do a Google search. I found Classic Shell. I got the Start menu back. I turned off active corners. I set it to boot to desktop. I also found a tweak to get the Quick Launch toolbar back.

My start menu is like 7, not XP.

When 10 forced me to upgrade, I wasn't happy at all. So I searched and found an answer. I was finally able to rip it out and get back to 8.1. I then went into Windows Update and set it to notify, not download. Then I checked for updates. Every update that dealt with 10, I right clicked and chose hide.

Mainstream support for 8.1 ends January 9, 2018. For 10 it's October 23, 2020. What happens then?

I haven't decided yet if I'm going to upgrade to 10 or not.

Every single time something new comes out, there are always a few die hards absolutely convinced they will stay put. I can only imagine how resistant people were to upgrading to the book from the scroll, to the ink on paper from the hammer and chisel, to the computer from the typewriter, etc.

Remember how angry people were to the idea of upgrading from xp to vista or 7?

If there's one universal truth, is that these die hards are always wrong or die out.

^ Is it beyond your ability to understand that people have done the research and decided for themselves that Win10 is a Microsoft 'shove down everyone's throats' product that isn't all that good? Or that some people simply cannot afford it no matter how good you claim it to be?

If you want me to try 10, buy me a computer that will handle it, because I certainly don't have one.

The only way I could afford the computer I have now was selling a coin collection that my mom gave to my brother and myself. It was actually my step-dad's and she gave it to us after he died.

My last box did fine with XP Pro but it wouldn't have handled either 7 or 8. I was waiting until support for XP died, then was going to do a 'build' and run 7. But the onboard video died and it wasn't worth the cost of putting in a new video card.

As for 10's spying, there are workarounds to stop it from doing that. Plenty of forums have the info on how to do it.

You can find the research to tell you anything. Vaccines are bad. Cigarettes are good. Heck, you can even find info on how to talk to the aliens called zeta.

I'm all for free will, so I'm not saying that people have to upgrade to 10. What I'm saying, though, is don't kid yourself. The car is a much better mean of transportation than the horse. Sure, there will always be a few Cowboys trying to make the case that everyone need to stay put with the horse.

The reason software developers like myself and MS want to see everyone using the latest update is because it's easier to support. I can't tell you how many times I've got an email from a user of my software bitching about a bug. My solution for them most of the time? Please update to the latest version. It's free.

Also, it's a pain in the ass to keep trying to support outdated components that date all the way back to xp. It's an even bigger pain in the ass to not use modern updated components because some die hards insist on not moving on from xp.

Every time I want to update something, I have to run tests to see how it would affect xp systems. It's like designing roads but always having to accommodate die hard horse riders.

Thanks, KaraBulut, for the info on the Windows key (ww) . I found Notepad / Wordpad on my own by scrolling thru the "all apps" selection under the start button. Accessories are not under the "A"'s but under the "W"'s since it is now called "Windows Accessories" ](*,)

I'm a techie, and I had a computer completely bricked after Win 10 installed its first update.
No recovery options working, or normal fixes. MS staff never figured it out, neither did a couple of proper guru level software techs.
Still see emails coming through quite frequently from the Windows support site with people saying the same.

I'm okay with 10, but it has more noticeable bugs than 7.

At the store where I work our self-checks run on Windows XP. And this a major retailer, can't think why they haven't updated. Of course the machines are programmed and serviced by NCR, so it's probably NCR that hasn't upgraded.

Every single time something new comes out, there are always those who praise it mindlessly without considering that there are other options.

I doubt he bothered to find out that among those rejecting Win 10 are a lot of the smartest techies out there and many people who believe in individual privacy.

No, there aren't workarounds -- except disconnecting from the internet. Microsoft set it up so it will tell you it stopped, but it didn't, really -- here's a report on one test of their claims: http://bgr.com/2016/02/10/windows-10-spying-investigation/

The closest you can come involves deleting core parts of the software (no voice commands, for example), making sure there is no Microsoft account associated with you or your machine, and never going to Microsoft online. This means, for one thing, that you lose Microsoft support for your software.

You're ignoring what knowledgeable people (including in this thread) have said about Win 10, namely that it is invasive, intrusive, rude, and demanding... and that's before you even get it!

It's as though you have a car you have customized over the years, and without asking someone comes along and starts adding parts and accessories you not only didn't ask for but find useless and annoying.

As for support, if Microsoft isn't willing to support old operating systems, they should do the honorable thing and give the code away free to the world so others can do what they won't.

I know two people to whom this has happened; for one, the store in Portland he turned to couldn't figure it out and shipped it off to some super-geeks; neither they nor Microslop could figure it out.

Microslop, of course, refused to take any responsibility; the store, however, gave him a new computer with the Windows of his choice (he went with 7).

Another guy who was thrilled with Win 10 had to change settings on the thing after it ran up a phone bill for him using his phone via bluetooth to make its reports back to Microslop. Apparently since he synched his phone with it, when he was away from any other internet connection it just used that.

I liked Windows 7. Bought a new computer that came with Windows 8.1. No complaints. I did the Windows 10 update. It's good. It gets the job done. My desktop e-mail program (Window Live Mail) that worked fine with Windows 8.1 doesn't work with Windows 10. I use the web mail now; don't want to buy Outlook, and the free Outlook downloads come with a price of their own. If Microsoft gets too greedy, my next computer might be an Apple.

Nope I have not "downgraded" any computers to win 10, and never plan to do so.
I never get those 'upgrade to win 10' messages since anything microsoft had been blocked in my modem/router.
And I eventually plan to get a real firewall, once I figure what to get...

and windows 8 because it has no start menu.
That can easily be fixed .. and you don't even need to download anything to do so.
I've done it to multiple computers.

As for FF, it sucks butt, it really does now. Can't get flash to work on it at all, so much porn, unable to see :(
Try IceDragon.. it works on some flash sites where FF refuses to.
FF used to be good, but not so much anymore. I'd still take it anyday over InternetExplorer though
(and Chrome... well I'd never infect a computer with that spyware)

My friend who is head of computer tech at a good-sized company refuses to allow Win 10 on any machines used in the building, even if they're private laptops, because of the massive Win 10 spy features.
One of the big reasons I want nothing to do with it (even if those 'features' can be blocked)

As for me...I'll be sticking with My:
Desktop 'main' computer: Win 98SE (what I use most of the time for the boring stuff I do online, like reading forums  )
Laptop #1: Win XP (only works plugged in now since the battery is gone, does the job when I need it)
Laptop #2: Win 7 (Screen is busted - hence the reason it was free .. but will work with a monitor connected)

Switched to Win10 last year and don't regret that. :)
