  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

How much cash reserve do you have??

Well...I have enough to buy a few frozen dinners..not the expensive ones though.

Cash, bank checking & savings or money market.

The new target is 12 months worth of living expenses. Say it takes 2K per month to pay bills & buy food then you should have $24,000.00 in cash reserve.

I dont believe many have that in today's economy. :(

Then I'm totally fucked. :(

I live paycheck to paycheck. If I lose my job i'm fucked.

I'm not a penny pincher, but I tend to horde as much money as I can (Usually because I think "I'm going to get this" then don't because I figure something better will come along so I'll save for that, and finally realize I didn't get whatever came before it and I lived just fine without so why bother with any lol.)
If I had to dip into my reserves, and my average spending in a month was 2k, I could live off it for quite a while.

it costs way more than 2k a month it live where i am. we have what is left of our savings and if things keep going the way they are that will be gone too, so i dont feel there is any "cushion". things could go frombad to worse at the drop of a hat.

I started saving the day I got my first pay cheque and have continued to do so monthly ever since.

The first objective was to have sufficient funds to cope if I lost my job. That was achieved rather early in my career and has been topped up as and when necessary.

Life Insurances, private pensions and other varied saving accounts had been taken out over the years.

The most important saving account though is my "Treats Account". It is from this that I pay my holidays and exceptional purchases. No good saving all your life for a hypothetical retirement if you can't enjoy spending a little in the present.

I do get the impression that people no longer save money. Credit seems too easy, so why wait until you have saved up enough money to buy the television, etc. that you yearn for.

LOL cash reserve! Not even the banks have cash reserves these days. The way they've been collapsing lately i'd be surprised if savers haven't taken whatever they had in their accounts and hidden it under their mattress. I mean at least if it gets stolen, you know where you stand with a thief. Bankers on the other hand......

Oh by the way I don't reserve cash, I spend it. I actually don't mind the feeling of being hungry either so if it all collapsed tomorrow i'd last on looks alone for a few seconds. ;)

I don't really need to worry about retirement... when I turn 65 in 12 years, I'm checking out.

Barring some financial miracle, there's no way I could survive on the pension I'd get.

Twelve years from now you are going to be a World-Famous Musician, writing film scores and having JUBOrgies at your chalet.

And when you load us up on your private jet, we can say "Yeah, we know him when..."

My paychecks are pretty reliable, except in the summer, so I always make sure that I have enough in my checking and saving accounts to last me the entire summer.

We're setting pretty good, I guess... a couple of solid jobs with good incomes, a good savings plan, and a nice inheritance has left us in pretty good shape. :)

Even if my home was paid off (which it is not), I don't think that I could live on $2k a month. My property taxes and association dues alone are around $1k/month. I have savings but not as much as I should have, especially being that there is only me paying for everything. I have worked hard to get my expenses down but I don't think that I could get them down to $2k/month. But I feel ok for now.
