in NY it goes by the weight of the vehicle, for tax purposes it goes by how much you paid. to be honest, i have no clue how much it costs tho.

Wow, that is expensive

I pay $36.00 a year

If I remember correctly, MN does plate tabs the same as MI.

It is a complicated formula based on the weight AND age of the vehicle.

Once your vehicle 'ages out' of the system...usually at about 10 years...you get to FINALLY pay the base rate, only based on the weight of the vehicle.

I just went and looked, the antique K Car is $21 a year. My van (nearly as old) is $30 ish...can't find the reciept at this moment, and the van is buried in a snowbank back in MI.

The 1999 VW Passat was nearly $600 the first year but this past time around it was $65. I'm expecting this year to get to the base of about $35.

In Canada, we buy small, stick-on expiry tags which we stick onto the licence place. Is this what you' re talking about?

I don't know what they cost here. I haven't bought licence tags in over 20 years.

Let's see... The initial title transfer costs about 70 bucks alone, the new plates cost 75, and then there's the taxes and what not, so initially it'll be around $200.

Yearly renewal is just 75.00 I believe...

From the State website:

Fee:
The typical application fees for a vehicle already registered and titled in your name are:

Title fee - $8 (an additional $2 is due to record a lien)
Public Safety Vehicle Fee - $3.50
Filing Fee - $8.50
License plate fee - $6 ($4.50 for single plate issue - such as trailers and motorcycles)

Registration Tax: Minnesota has an "ad valorem" registration tax system for passenger class vehicles. The age of the vehicle also is a factor in determining passenger registration tax: The minimum tax for vehicles 10 years old and older is $35.

To determine registration tax you may contact MN Dept. of Public Safety (DPS) central office at (651) 296-6911, a deputy registrar office.

In Georgia, everyone pays a "plate" or license fee of $20.00. Personalized tags cost more. We also have what is called "Ad Valorem" tax attached to the tag fee. It's based on the current value of your car. I have a 2003 Mustang GT convertible. I think last year it was around $225. It really sucks when you get a new car because in addition to car payments, the first few years run around $500.

I just renewed. 76 for a truck, and 65 for a my car here in WI.

in texas, it's $67, but we place our sticker on our windshield.

Do you guys still have to get a 'safety' inspection? That was the sticker on the windshield when I lived there.

Mine is $25 bucks for a sticker that is similar to the one posted by gsdx. We do not have a wheel tax or any other tax on our vehicles. I'm sure my govt. gets money off me in some other form. One way or another, we all end up paying.

I assume you mean the annual renewal stickers that go on the license plate - $70 in Canada.

Or for our international audience, €44. £38. USD 55. AUD 87. ¥5200.

'06 MINI is $172, my 14 year old GMC is $88, and my 6 year old scooter costs $74. I am tag poor.

...in California and that doesn't include "smog" checks

I think that each state is different. I live in California and drive a 2008 toyota prius. I think that the fee was around $198. And it may go up a little this year because the new state budget increased them to help fund the state.

In NJ I just paid about $80 - and that is for a special plate with a light house on it - I have to pay more for a vanity plate. A standard issue plate is about $60.
