How much money do you give to the homeless?

Last November I was coming out of a bank after cashing my paycheck. I noticed a homeless guy ovserving our transactions. Upon exiting the bank, he stopped me and said: "Hey buddy, you got a buck so I can get a coffee and a donut". I said I'm sorry, but I only have twenties...........his response:

"I got change"

I do not give them money anymore.

I don't hand out money to people on the street. I find a legitimate organization that helps homeless people and donate to them. The best thing you can donate is your time. Go to a food shelter and help out.

Lots of syndicated "homeless" in KL..so I dont give any of my hard earned cash [-X

Homeless I find on the street--always nothing. Here, there are quite a number of homeless shelters/organizations just for that purpose. Currently I don't give to those organizations, since I give money to other causes. But my thinking is this: at some point you have to swallow your pride and *ask* for help. As we said when my brother was a baby, "Use your words."

I never give money, not even to the street kids begging at the traffic lights. If I have I will give food.

None because if there british residents there entitled to a jobseekers allowance that can pay the rent for a room. Oh wait - then they wouled have to work...

:grrr:

forgetting one thing, they need an address to be entitled to benefits, its catch 22, they cant get help with out an home, and they cant get a home without help - needless to say i never give them a cent, but will give them cigarettes if they ask

On the rare occasions that I actually leave my flat, I usually give money to any homeless people I encounter. I'm well aware that if it wasn't for the support of friends, I myself would've ended up living on the streets a few years back, due to eviction/mental health issues.

Sorry, but I don't give them shit. I refuse to help those who will not help themselves. For gods sakes!!! Have some pride, get off your ass and go to Burgerking, all you have to say is, Can I please have an application.

If they wanted a job they could find one. That's the bottom line.

I don't give money directly to people on the street. Mostly because I never see any. But I give money to the food shelters and clothes to the homeless shelters.

I generally donate to causes that feed and clothe people. I rarely give to anyone on the street after the one time a guy asked for a buck for a cup of coffee and I told him I'd do him one better and take him to a diner and buy him lunch, he told me to go fuck myself. The other one was a guy ask for spare change use to get on the bus, I pulled out my wallet (you should have seen his face light up)handed him a bus ticket and said here now you have enough for the bus. He told me to go to hell. If you were honest and said you wanted a buck for cigarettes or booze I'd probably give you two.

I'll give money to buskers if I like what they're playing, and I'll occasionally buy the Big Issue if there's something in it that interests me, but I don't ever give money to people who aren't doing anything except asking for it.

I normally will give $1 here or there. I've bought them dinners before.
I had a friend in high school who was homeless. Her mother was a single parent who lost her job after her husband died. She was injured and spent some time in the hospital. She didn't have insurance and didn't work at her new job long enough to have any sick leave - she lost that job too because she was gone too long. Her mother had to get a job at McDonald's but supporting her 2 daughters on $6 an hour made it impossible to pay rent and a car payment. They ended up living in a wooded lot near the school. She would get to school early so she could shower.
When you're homeless, you can't get a job because you don't have an address. If you don't have a job, it's impossible to get an address.
I figure, I have more than they do and if I can donate something then I should. I don't know everyone's situation.

I never give money to the homeless on the street in DC....there is a pretty good social net with plenty of opportunities. The other night saw a large event at Verizon Center; it was amazing how the "homeless" have their "routes" and they were out in full force around the event. I was having company come by so I stopped at the liquor store a few blocks from my house and a few blocks from Verizon--it was packed with these folks using their "money for food" to buy "money for booze."

I give to organizations that help the homeless; I give and help with Whitman-Walker (gay men's clinic); I don't give on the street.

When I worked in Center City, I used to give money to the homeless all the time. Then I took a class on homelessness and learned that giving homeless people money perpetuates the problem. It would be better to give the money to charities that try to give homeless people jobs and houses.

I'll never forget what the instructor said at the end of the semester. He said if everyone in the United States donated their IRS refund to the homeless for just one year, that would solve the problem. I would definitely do that.

You need a address and phone number to put on the application and most times nobody uses applications anymore. Being a manager of a well known place here in Toronto , we dont have applications but expect resumes when people come in to apply for a job.

I have given some spare change or loose bills to some homeless here in toronto. If they are fooling me and truley dont need the money but are just too lazy to work then sobeit. At least I feel good about the action I did.
