Have you ever read the Bible, and how far have you read?
Do you believe in it?

After getting through the first page, at around age 13, is when I decided I was an atheist/agnostic/naturalist.

'nuff said.

I've read almost all of it, have several segments memorized (just by repetition), and have cross-references to other holy books. I believe in the messages, not the literal value of every last word. I'm a believer as another good, Catholic boy. :)

I've read the New Testament and the most well-known parts of the Old Testament.

I absolutely believe it.

Despite a very religious upbringing, I had never read any of it until I was a Freshmen in college. I had to read part of it for a book report. Was it 10 books or 10 chapters? I don't remember. I loved Bible stories as a kid, but the Bible has been difficult for me to read and to understand since then.

](*,) ](*,)

Primarily the Mourner's Prayer = at Yom Kippur Services many years ago. I shall rarely attend a funeral, and if I do, I always sit in the back seats.

Because of an event during childhood and what I was told about it at first, it is basically almost impossible for me to enter a Temple in comfort. I do not feel at peace there.

I have never read and or had a bible.

I have only read the random portions that you find throughout Sunday mass. Though raised Catholic, I don't put much stock in the Bible in terms of defining my faith. I see it more like Aesop's Fables than anything else - good solid morals to live by, but don't read into it too much, the world has changed too much in the past 2000 years for it all to still apply. Great work of literature.

Both the Old and New Testaments are very difficult to read on ones own.
Especially the Old Testament.
There is much that can be misinterpreted or misunderstood; I think for a true understanding you need to have someone to discuss the difficult points with.... someone that understands and has studied it.
There are many different interpretatons of the text, even if all discussion is regarding the same Bible, which is usually the King James Version. I'm not smart enough to understand it all on my own though many of my fellow jubbers may be.
When Jesus speaks in the NT he often speaks in parables. This was a common form of teaching in those times. The ancient Greek scholars often used the same form of teaching.
I believe the Bible does contain the Word of God, but for a true understanding you need to have access to someone that understands it far better than a lay person. Someone that understands the entire context of all the scripture, and in the context of the time it was written.

I've read the bible cover to cover although I'd admit that there are passages that I can't thoroughly make sense of, and there are names and stories that I just can't remember.

I still read the bible regularly and whilst I believe in God and His word, I think it's not the bible's fault but mankind in their interpretation of His word. God is love and I believe in that and I think what really matters is a relationship between oneself and God, and NOT through someone who 'claims' to know God any better i.e. teachings and rulings.....

I was pretty much forced to read it all since birth... lol

I've read just about all of it, but not in sequence and not all in a single time period. I believe in the deeper spiritual meaning of it.

Interesting Essay. I will mark it to use in the future. I really liked that you include the actual words used in the original text.

None...well that's not totally true...I do like using the following quote from Pulp Fiction....

[Ezekiel 25:17 among others]
Jules: The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the iniquities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he, who in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who would attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know my name is the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon thee. :-<

How much have I read? One or two verses. Do I believe in it. No. What confuses me tho is when I'm in trouble I always think to myself "Please God help me".
