How much do you feel it would cost to decorate a 2,100 SQ FT home?

I am in a debate about it. I am being made fun of for thinking way too much. In my defense though I like expensive things. What would you think it would cost?

Starting with nothing? 2100 sq ft over here in my area, that usually means about 3-4 bedrooms, 2 baths, and 1 living room and I family room. Decoration solely, I say about $10k-$20k for all necessary furniture, down to the details like utensils and toilet paper. TBH, it's hard to say as "expensive" is a relative term.

What do you want it to look like? (i.e. Traditional, Contemporary, Minimalist)

Try a dollar per square foot... if it is not enough, add another dollar and keep repeating until you think it amounts to enough money for the redo.

As much or as little as you want it to.

Ask yourself this first: what do I NEED?

How long is a piece of rope?

You want furniture from Ikea or Furniture from BlüPrint?

You want good stuff that will last or cheaper stuff that you'll want to replace in a couple years? When I was younger I loved Ikea because the stuff would last about as long as it took me to get sick of it and want something new.

Thynight, I'll ask a professional. I'll get back to you tonight.

The first question they will ask you is, "what is your budget?" If you can't tell us that, I wouldn't be surprised if the interior designer walked out.

I watch some of those design shows and it always amazes me how much you can do with say $5-10k, particularly if you do a lot of work yourself and with friends.

Another good thing is that well-made furniture can be bought more cheaply in the south. Lots of people from the northeast will travel to the carolinas to buy furniture.
The most expensive way is what I did - I paid retail at department stores. So, for example, I furnished my living room and bedroom out of Bloomingdales. Love what I bought, but paid too much. And it was during the boom years. You will be able to get some real deals.

you have to give a designer a budget. you can't ask them how much it will cost. you've got the process completely backwards.

I'm not doing it right now. I was just talking to someone about it that said I was way over. So far you guys seem to agree with me though.

Thynight, he told me that if you shopped at thrift stores, consignment shops, and did a lot of painting yourself, you might be able to do it for $10k.

He didn't recommend this, though. He says it's better to get higher-end stuff, and do one room at a time, starting with your master, and adding rooms as the budget allowed. Using this approach, $30k would be a benchmark.

Of course, you can go as high as you want.

One thing to remember: a renovation usually will cost twice as much as you expect, and will take twice as long. This is because unexpected shit happens.

When I buy my house I will have it done all at once. I was just in a debate about how much it would cost. I said 20 to 50K and they made fun of me for being out of touch. It seems I was closer than they were though.

If you want to spend $500 or $5 million to decorate the house the way you want it, and you can afford it, that's all that matters. The dollar value is totally unimportant.

Three years ago, my partner moved into a 3-bedroom condo about that size. We spent about $25,000 in furniture, art, and whatnot. We pretty much started over when we moved here because our old place was an accumulation of my stuff, his stuff, and stuff neither one of us remembered originally owning. So, we sold it all off and stared over with furnishings specifically for this place. We aren't done--we have about $5000 more to furnish whenever we get around to it and make up our minds. So, I'd say you could do a decent job for $25-30k, depending on your market and tastes.

>>>Couldn't he buy another house for the budget he mentioned?

Yes. So?

Bob bought a hundred-dollar suit
But couldn't afford any underwear.
Says he, "If your outside looks real good
No one will know what's under there"

Jack bought some hundred-dollar shorts
But wore a suit with rips and tears.
Says he, "It won't matter what people see
As long as I know what's under there"

Tom bought a flute and a box of crayons,
Some bread and cheese and a golden pear.
And as for his suit or his underwear
He doesn't think about them much....or care
