Hey all.

My computer crashed last week, apparently because of a virus.

Now my sister wants a friend of hers to check it out. This guy's a computer wiz.

Now, I don't like the idea of him fiddling with my computer. I'm worried he'd find traces of the porn I deleted. It would be sooo embarrassing. I watched video on stream constantly from sites like jerkyourtube, pornotube and stuff, and I'm worried they might have left traces. I cleared up the cache every time, but still I worry that might not have been enough.

I also downloaded some movies, of course I deleted them but what if there are traces left? How can I delete everything so that not even a computer wiz will find any clue? (granted I can still access to the data, no matter the virus)

HELP PLIZ!

If the browser data is stored on your hard drive, the individual sites and videos will occupy such a small amount of space, that while he's recovering everything - if his process even offers an opportunity to glimpse at filenames (which I doubt it will) - the text '"jerkyourtube," "pornotube," etc, wouldn't even appear on screen long enough for the computer to justify displaying it - and if so, for such a short duration of time that it would never register with whoever's looking at it. Also, if you're worried about download files, they're almost always named "001.mov" "002.avi" or something, right? So who cares? Again, I don't think it will even be an issue. He won't be sitting there trying to watch for your secret porn stash to pop up.

Knowing the nature of your crash would help, too. I imagine your computer is simply inaccessible, while your files remain undeleted. In this case, he would never even have to see what files you've got wherever. UNLESS of course you got the virus FROM downloaded porn... then - unless he's reformatting the hard drive - I could see your need for concern. AND EVEN THEN - I still wonder why you're concerned? Albeit it's a bit embarrassing, I'm sure he's poked around a porn site or two himself. And didn't you say you deleted the downloaded files? That would eliminate the possibility of the virus being porn-related.

Good luck with the PC recovery - porn should be the least of your worries! It sucks losing all our personal files, I know firsthand. Keep us posted!

But can he still open that kind of files? I mean I deleted them, but I always dreaded the 'recover deleted files' possibility.

Could you please delve into the bold parts? How could I have gotten a virus from a video file? I mean, all the porn I've downloaded came from eMule. I opened the files and they matched the titles just fine. Then I saved them on a DVD and deleted them from my computer. A couple of weeks later, the computer crashed. The two things can't be related right?

Thanks for your help!

You can't. Porn is here to stay. Porn is forever.

unless you run a high-level reformat (I believe the DoD reformat overwrites every single sector on the disk multiple times) or physically destroy the drive, pretty much anything can be recovered if you really want to.

if you have a lab .. some .. yeah. a reformat and single overwrite usually is enough with today's data density. the 7+ overwrites stories are remnants of the old days

I thought I had my porn hidden pretty well. I let a friend use my computer and he had opened MS player and the videos were listed on the top in plain sight. He never mentioned anything, my face turned red and that was it.

Besides, he might be cute and it could lead somewhere...

I can't speak for others, but when I've worked on friends', colleagues' computers I never looked at any files. It was a line I told myself I would never cross.

I think in today's age of porn, one expects it to exist on every computer.

I say relax and have him fix it.

Okay,

but what if I downloaded a porn flick, and that exact video caused the crash? Maybe the video contained some virus or something.

So, my question is:
say the cause of the crash was a virus. Say the virus was in a porn file, which I deleted. Say the file was named Jack fucks John (so it's obvious it's gay).

Will he be able to trace it all back to such file (hence finding out about me) even though I deleted it?

Yeah I'm being paranoid, but I'm also curious, that's why I want to know.

Well you could always remove your hard drive, and ask the friend to install the operating system on a new hard drive. (Then you could put back your current hard drive as a second drive).

Just tell the friend that you removed the hard drive because someone told you it was bad - and you didn't know how to install a new one. Hard drives are pretty cheap (depending on size < $100 even under $50 (for a 500G. I just looked at bestbuy.com).

The friend (or you) could reinstall the operating system on the new hard drive - and you'd have to reinstall all they software you require.

Sorry I haven't gotten back to ya!

I'm not making any promises, but my short-answer opinion would be no. My long answer is Idunno. It's hard to say given the sneaky nature of viral activity, and not knowing exactly how you use your comp (which only you know).

Long-answer opinion:
If you did in fact get the virus from downloaded porn - which you very may well have (see below) - and then deleted every file like you say - the virus has likely infected your computer independent of the source file.
For example: you opened an infected file, then it installed a program you didn't notice ("Internet Antivirus 2011" for instance, although this particular malware wouldn't cause the problems you're having), and even though you deleted the root file (the porn), the program still remains on your system.
In this case, the porn wouldn't be detectable (unless you put it in the Recycle Bin or something #-o).

Files from P2P programs like Limewire and eMule are mostly safe - but when you're downloading single files of music or video like that, hackers/bad guys can easily disguise those files as viruses that infect your computer. Have you ever downloaded and opened something that wasn't a video, and nothing happened at all? Or you opened it, then a weird error popped up? Maybe then you just deleted it? Maybe it wouldn't let you delete it. That was probably a virus. It's easy to spot them before you download if you look for an unusually small file size.

Like I said, it's really hard to say whether or not he's going to find you out. I think you're going to be in the clear, though - truly. Don't sweat it. Worst case scenario, just be like "HOW THE FUCK DID THAT GET ON THERE?" Lol....

Just to ease your mind, why not do a little anti-viral work yourself? Before he gets there, ya know? Or is your computer entirely inaccessible? I assume not, since you're posting on JUB, after all. So, do some Googling about how to find deleted files - there are free programs out there, I'm sure. Download a free anti-virus prog or three and do some scans - I recommend Spybot, among others.

If you can't find any traces of porn or porn titles after employing some rudimentary computer-cleaning methods, he probably won't either.

Good luck!!!!!! Hope my rambling is in some way useful, or something.

If you have already lost all your GOOD stuff due to deleting it yourself what's the object of having someone ELSE even LOOK at your cumputer?
Format the hard drive and reinstall your operating system yourself.
Problem solved....... (!)

I would also check the library on your Window Media Player and Realplayer. Realplayer almost seems to add anything you play on WM to it's library. You would just need to delete from the library.

I'm going to ask a question I probably know the answer to.

Are you out to your sister and your family?

For simplicity in getting rid of internet files, run a program like CCleaner and then defrag. If you don't like CCleaner or similar, clear the caches, find your temporary internet file folder, and delete the index file (since it has a list of the sites you visit), and then defrag.

Defragging after deleting is important because while it won't stop forensic level recovery tools, it will prevent simple restore deleted file operations.

You can easily find out what caused the crash. Exactly what caused it.

All you need to do is locate the dump files or error record.

You can find out exactly what caused the crash by tracking down the dump file or the error log.

Okay, I ran CCleaner and it deleted a number of files.
Now what is defrag? I'm not sure what it means.

Hey MindBlast, how do I track down the dump file/error log? I have no clue, but I'm more than willing to learn :)

Thanks for your help, guys!

Hey Crubbed!
Lots of horror stories out there from dudes who have taken their 'puters to repair shops and the techie finds "deleted" files; a few of them in jail still!
If you download "Recuva", a free programme, and run "find all files", you won't believe how much "deleted" material is still there; even files you didn't "save", ie. all images your browser downloaded, regardless of what you did with that particular screen.
Run Recuva, then you can select all the files and it will overwrite them by the number of passes you select. I suppose a high level forensic tech might be able to get past this anyway, but your "friend" likely wouldn't go to that effort even if he had the technical ability.
This is assuming of course that your machine still works. If not, take the drive out and install it as a slave on a good machine, and select that drive as the one to be scanned.
Hope this helps, PB

Mate you just need to do what I do with my porn collection, put it on a portable hard drive and put it some where hidden away if you share a computer or you have people looking at your computer, make sure you clear your browsing history and catche. Yeah its possable to find porn if you look for it and its not in a obvious place. To be perfitly honest, I would say, if you have nothing of any value on the computer i'd say to the guy can you please reformat the hard drive please., there's no need to even go onto an opperating system where you porn is. HE would NEVER know. USB and portable hard drives are cheap these days, best way to store your downloaded porn, no point in trying to hide it on your computer, when you could actually hide it away from your PC if you care about what other people think about your porn.
