Post cheap and effective methods to destroy a hard drive :badgrin:
 
the former will only destroy your microwave
the later will smash the harddrive, but you can still restore the data.

you need to find one of those degaussers:

BUUZZZZZ and gone is your data, and the harddrive surface is beyond repair, too.
 
Get a good drill. Drill at least four holes. One hole would make it useless to 99% of the world.
 
Hmm.... okay, deep 6 that sucker if your close to open water. Oh wait, that's not green is it? Oh well.

I'd place my money on the drilling suggestion, and at least 4 holes to boot!

Agreed. A radio news segment covered this. Between drilling, microwaving, hammering, burning and running it over, the only one that actually made it unreadable was making drill holes.
 
I have a metal grinding wheel at work that will turn the disk part into metal dust
 
I only have a small hammer, no drill or grinding wheel :cry:
 
Get/mix up some thermite, put a heap of it on top of the HDD and ignite.

I doubt any data could be retrieved from a pool of melted metal.
 
Unless you are a member of an international spy ring, and expect someone will go through your trash to find hard drives, a few blows with with a hammer or brick until the case is sufficiently deformed that it won't fit in a hard drive slot, will be more than enough. If you're really worried, pour some salty water into it before you throw it away - most of it's moving parts will be corroded beyond use within a few days.
