How to get files off a dead computer?

My computer died a few months ago :cry::cry::cry: and now I've got a new one....here is my problem how do I get my files from my old computer to my new one?:confused:
 
When I say died well it stays on for a about a minute then shuts down. I tried to get it fixed but there was nothing they could do. I want my files and I've asked everyone I know but no one can help me I hope someone here can!
 
well you've not given us much info to go on. you didn't tell us what kind of computer the old one was, or what the new one is, or what type of operating system was on either.

it primarily depends on what was wrong with the old machine. if it was the old machine's hard drive was failing then you're likely out of luck.

if it was not the old computer's hard drive then you likely can take it out of the old one and install it into the new one similar to what was mentioned above. however, since we don't know what kind of computer your new one is (make, model, laptop? etc) we can't give you that much help just yet. give us some more info and we'll try and help ;)
 
Ok, New one a Dell latitude C610....old one a hp pavilion. both laptops, with the old one it wasn't the hd I think it was the fan....it over heated fast and wouldn't stay on for more than a min.

May I ask what the HP pavilion's model number is? with the model number, it'll be easy to find out if it's a sata drive or an IDE type drive. once that is figured out you can possible go purchase an external case for that Hard drive and use it as an external drive to get your files off of.

I am going to say that the hard drive is an ATA (IDE is what I say most of the times) hard drive. Same goes with the dell... you could switch the HD, but you'll still need an external to save/back up your info. What I would suggest is take the hard drive from the computer that is having problems and get your self an 2.5" ATA external enclosures for it and get your info that way. you can get these external enclosures from Newegg.com or many online/drive to retailers. I would suggest MASSCOOL UE211 Aluminum as it's inexpensive and it so far it's worked for me, that's if you go that rout...

You can always go and switch hard drives, though you might have problems with the OS as it's from two different companies...

Hmm did they try and clean it? A good old paint brush works wonders!

When you say stays on for a minute do you mean from the time you physically turn it on it lasts a minute, or from when you get into Windows? Does it crash at exactly the same place every time? It's possibly even a software problem...

I would agree with the enclosure idea, or simply an IDE/SATA to USB adaptor.
 
^^No it would start fine then all of a sudden the fan would just stop dead. tried to fine a new fan didn't work out they don't make the model anymore....then went on to get a few cans of air and blast it clean.....that didn't help either. and yeah it would stop at almost the same place it would start to load and then get to the desktop for a few seconds then die.

Thanks! ..| Went to the site and saw the Masscool u211....I think I'm going to try that one!:D Now my only problem is how to get the old hd out right.:help:

Here is how you take it out... http: //h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c00374392.pdf (get rid of the space I added and search). Once your done that and the PDF loads up, look to the left of the PDF and scroll down to a topic of removal and replacement procedure (aka page 5-2). Remember to take the battery out and then go to steps 5-7 to 5-9 and on those pages will describe how to take the hard drive out.

once you have the hard drive out, take the external enclosure and just simply put the hard drive in. screw the screws in and then use the included dual USB cord and plug it into a working computer and you should be able to get most of your data, once you have your data, you can keep it as an external or put the hard drive back into the HP.

Another thing, the people that said it wasn't fixable, it is, it's just costly and can be almost the same price as a new notebook. also, what I just described is how they would go about getting your information just at the cost of your time and the external enclosure instead of over $$$.

Now if this doesn't work... then there is a good chance that the hard drive is dead/dieing, but the chances of that is slim, just be careful transferring it from the computer to the enclosure. Just I thought to warn you just in case. (computers hate people some times)

Hmm, could you maybe go into the BIOS and monitor the system temperature? It should tell you whether it is overheating. (On booting up it keep pressing delete, F1 or F2. It might even tell you which key to press on the screen)
 
They make wonderful things called external hard drive enclosures. They are used for situations exactly like this. You take your hard drive out of your old computer, put it into one of these, and plug it into your new computer via USB (or eSATA, depending on model).

You are looking for a 2.5 Inch enclosure because it is a laptop hard drive (3.5 are Desktop models), and probably just need USB, so something like this. They are pretty cheap, like $10-$20, and now you have an external hard drive the size of whatever your old hard drive was.

That's great, though I would have waited for the external enclosure first. but hey that's me ^_^

Hey everybody I'm back! :wave: Got the enclosur in the mail!....But now I'm having another problem I Removed the hard drive frame, but I can't seem to be able to Remove the hard drive connector. I've tried and tried! damn it and I was so close to being finished!:mad::cry:
