How to get files off a dead computer?

Okay. I'm so confused! I think my all files have been erased! I can't find them anywhere? Is this supposed to happen? the Installation Manual is not any help @ all!!! and the driver cd that came with it doesn't auto play or auto install. it doesn't help me either!
 
Okay, If you've read the above posts......you'll know that I have an external hard drive. Well now I have a problem I just can't solve.....so I'm reaching out!:help:

I want to free up all if not most of my used space on my external hd. I have 35.3 gb of used space and only 1.91 of gb of free space.....how do I free up some space?

I've tried disk cleanup, and to defrag...but nothing helps! #-o What to do?:cry:

I take it you found the files on the drive? sorry for not replying to that.

anyways, there isn't much you can do with freeing up space besides going through the drive and deleting files no longer of interest or desire. You could compress the drive (selective sub folders), but I personally don't recommend it.

that's my 2 cent's worth, maybe there is something some one else knows that I don't when it comes to adding more space to a hard disk. :(

I've Found a few. Not as many as I would have liked but what I did find is what I really wanted!

When I looked through the files and folders they were empty. :( but the disk is still full.

did you format it? The operating system from the previous computer can still be on it and that could take around 5-8 gigs alone. Also, with any programs that were installed on it can take a good chunk of space too.
 
Why not copy all the files you want to your new computer then format the old hard drive to free up all its space. I would be wary of using it as a data back up, if you had considered this, as it sounds as if it might have issues.
 
How would I go about formating it? I think I've gotten everything I want off of it. Most of the files I can't even find.

well some files could be hidden.
So, you may want to try this if you all ready haven't...

*When looking at the folder(s), go to tools up on top and scroll down to folder options.
*A menu will appear with four tabs up on top. Click 'view.'
*Go to advance settings, and you'll see not to far down something called 'hidden files and folders.' Under this, select 'show hidden files and folders.'

*If some of your files don't show up then there is nothing you can do that I know of.


To format (THIS will erase everything on that drive):

*Go to 'my computer' right click on the external HD
*You'll see a menu pop up, on that menu should be something called Format, 'click.'
*You'll see something pop up with the title 'format (name of drive)'
*Don't need to look at capacity
*File system, if you have an option for FAT32 go for it sense your using it as a external drive and you'll have a little bit more space. Though NTFS is fine and is more secure.
*Ignore the Allocation unit size.
*Volume label (chose desire name for drive).
*Quick format is fine, it's up to you.
*Compression is up to you, you can do this after it's been formatted if you wish.

***Just to re-iterate *this will erase everything on that drive*

If the disk is bigger than 32 Gig use fat32format this can format large disks to fat32 and it also does it in seconds. I did a 250 gig one in about 6 seconds! Even if it is smaller it is worth using, it is ony 22k in size and runs in a dos window. Just type Fat32Format X: where X is the letter of your external hard drive.

What are the benefits of using this over a quick format in Windows? Or Disk Utility on Mac for you...
