So I've been running for the better part of five months now - I've gained a decent amount of leg and arm muscle, and also stomach (abs?) muscle. I'm starting to look more like a 20 year old. :P

Anyway, despite all of this muscle I'm gaining, my gut still sticks out - if I suck it in you can see where the muscle is building, you can see the abs taking form. But it's been like that for a few months now, with seemingly nothing changing.

Any ideas on other things I can do? I've been told constantly sucking in my gut while doing anything from typing this post to standing around can help it take shape; but it's a hell of a lot of work to do so, it's really hard to remember to suck it in the moment something 0.5% more interesting happens.

Thanks!

Combined with a healthy diet, that helps you shed excess fat specific exercises such as the following assists tighten tummy muscles

Is the issue fat on top of the muscles or does it seem like the issue is underneath the muscles (like your abdomen is being pushed out from the inside of your belly)?

Would you be comfortable posting a torso shot from the front and side?

My diet could be better, it's so hard to eat healthier things though. I could probably try doing what that guy is doing, I'd definitely have to do it before a run though, otherwise I'd be too tired!

I believe the issue is fat on top of the muscles, that's definitely how it feels.

If you PM me I will respond with pics (I'm self conscious right now, don't want everyone to see =p), I'll send some showing my stomach relaxed, and showing when I hold it in.

Oddly enough, pictures can't be attached to PMs. If you have some posted in your private gallery or elsewhere on the web, you can PM the links.

If the fat overlays the muscle, then reducing simple carbohydrates in your diet along with aerobic exercise will reduce the fat stores around the waistline. You may need to track it using a tape measure to determine whether the fat is getting smaller- it's difficult to tell just by looking in the mirror.

In older guys, there is a store of fat that builds up under the muscles - around the internal organs. In some guys, this leads to a separation between the vertical abdominal muscles which causes a "belly" to form between the ribcage and the bellybutton. There's a different set of exercises for this problem.

Generally, running of jogging will tighten the abdominal muscles as well as anything.

add about 90 minutes of fat burning cardio a week along with weight lifting. With weight lifting, you want your heart beating at a fat burning rate constantly so I would not wait more than 30 seconds to start your next set. I like it because you could get your workout done in less time and get a good workout. :gogirl::D
