How to recover more RAM

The only part of this that I understand is that RAM mean Random Access Memory... but I could be wrong about that too.

So, anyways, I got the Starcraft Battlechest and the WarCraft 3 battlechest for xmas... I finished Starcraft and went to download WarCraft 3. When I went to load the expansion pack, it said there wasn't enough RAM. So, figuring I could always reinstall it later, I uninstalled Starcraft.

When I went and tried to load the expansion for WC3, it still had the RAM statement, but it let me install it anyways.

It works.

Should I care, or did I do something wrong?
 
RAM is "working memory". that means it is not related to your harddrive space. uninstalling something will not give you more RAM. exiting some programs however can free some RAM.
how much RAM does your machine have? it sounds not like a lot, because the warcraft 3 requirement should be really low.
 
umm, well, it's a Dell (probably enough said) laptop that a friend gave me.

how would I find out how much RAM it thinks it has?

go to you control panel (I am guessing your using windows XP, windows 2000), it should be in classic mode which will show you a bunch of icons. you want to look for the icon that has system under it. Click that. you'll get another screen that says system properties, click general if it already isn't selected, the look for computer, you'll find the amount of ram under that.

depending on the age of the laptop, it is easy to add ram if needed.

You have 512 mb RAM. Check how much RAM is needed for the game and add what you require.
 
To optimize RAM you can do "swapping" with the hard drives and use available memory in these drives to supplement the existing RAM. I just found out that it is possible just the other night. How to do swapping, I have not yet figure it out. Maybe with swapping there is hope for you.
 
decreasing the number of programs running while trying to play a game or whatever will increase the amount of ram available to any one program. you can also see how much ram you have by right clicking your "my computer icon" and selecting properties.

you might have a bunch of programs running in the background (some are those little icons over by your clock on the task bar) that are taking up ram that you can temporarily disable.

That means your using around 8mb for your integrated video card. Also, the game only requires 128mb of ram and 8mb of video ram, so you have enough to run the program. As mike_n_herrin stated try disabling/shutting down programs that you aren't using. Like web browsers, any messengers, or music players.
 
512 MB of ram? I think you should do yourself a favor and just buy some more ram. It's relatively cheap and www.crucial.com let's you download a scanner to use on your system and when you activate it, it will tell you exactly what to purchase and how much it'll cost.
 
Buying RAM is a cheap solution, but 512 is enough to play Warcraft III or Stracraft (Both amazing games BTW, but I am more partial to Starcraft personally).

Warcraft III with 512 MB of ram will run slowly if you have a large battle going on, and your frame rate might start to stutter. If this doesn't bother you though, then you don't really need to worry about it. You didn't do anything wrong, just know that your computer is on the bottom line of what can run that game.
