I now got a mac book pro and it has 10.6 OS X... now i wanna watch my movies which many have different codecs.. for windows it was just easy to download the codecs for windows media player and that was it.. u called it a day. I just browsed around the internet for codecs and found them for PC. Now for mac.. everyone mainly uses quicktime.. and I gotta PAY for the codecs... and im not gonna do that. What other player can i use or how do i get the codecs for free? thanks!

Download VLC, it can play almost anything.

And install the Perian plugin for quicktime.

Between those you should be covered.

well it's a mac.
you'll pay for most things

Nope, both those programs I mentioned are free.

I'm unaware of any free app that will play mpeg2 directly in that format if you are talking about a standalone file (not a DVD), but that's the same on Windows.

Lots of misinformation in this thread!

Apple have included a free DVD player (which also plays VideoTS and MPEG2 Transport stream files) since the first version of OS X - something that Windows didn't include until years later. The only reason to purchase the MPEG2 add-on for Quicktime is if you need to encode MPEG2 content or view MPEG2 elementary streams within Quicktime. That would only happen if you're authoring DVDs with DVD Studio Pro or another pro DVD app. Even those are supported free, as bolded below.

As mentioned above by Hotlatboi, install the FREE Perian codec pack for the following support:

File formats: AVI, DIVX, FLV, MKV, GVI, VP6, and VFW
Video types: MS-MPEG4 v1 & v2, DivX, 3ivx, H.264, Sorenson H.263, FLV/Sorenson Spark, FSV1, VP6, H263i, VP3, HuffYUV, FFVHuff, MPEG1 & MPEG2 Video, Fraps, Snow, NuppelVideo, Techsmith Screen Capture, DosBox Capture

Audio types: Windows Media Audio v1 & v2, Flash ADPCM, Xiph Vorbis (in Matroska), and MPEG Layer I & II Audio, True Audio, DTS Coherent Acoustics, Nellymoser ASAO

AVI support for: AAC, AC3 Audio, H.264, MPEG4, and VBR MP3

Subtitle support for SSA/ASS and SRT

Also install the FREE Flip4Mac codec to enable Windows Media files in Quicktime.

Anything else will probably be supported by the FREE VLC, also mentioned above.

Want to rip DVDs? Use the FREE Mac The Ripper.

Want to RIP DVDs or other files for use on iPod/iPhone and other portables, or convert to avi/divx/xvid/H.264? Or rip movies to add to iTunes or an Apple TV? Use the FREE open source application Handbrake.

And if the FREE Media Centre software included with your Mac (FrontRow) doesn't do everything you want, try the FREE open source application Plex, which is quite awesome.

Did I mention that all those things are FREE? :-)
