I think I'm awesome. I like the way I look and yes, I've jerked off in the mirror before. Some would immediately give me a ten based on that.

But I don't think that expands outwards. My love of myself is like my love of certain music, or certain foods, or certain movies. I think they're awesome, but I'm well-aware that not everybody does. I'm cool with people thinking my taste in music and movies is lousy, and I'm cool if they feel the same way about my taste in men, including my taste in myself. I guess that's where the "excessive" part of the definition comes in.

So I'm not sure. Vanity definitely starts with "I think I'm awesome", but there seems to be a suggestion that it expands to include 'everybody else thinks I'm awesome, or at least should feel that way".

But "lacking in substance"? That I have down to a science.

I'm a 9, probably.

I make a point of looking decent and asking for an opinion or two before setting foot out of the door.

Not to say I have someone to pick my wardrobe - I do wear what I want to - but I will bounce what I'm wearing off my people just to make sure the colours match and I don't look like I've just stumbled out of Auschwitz or an orphanage and tweak as necessary.

I also do flash brands here and there. Clothes do maketh the man, after all, and high-end clothes tend to work better with less effort.
