How Were Racial Stereotypes Discussed In Your Household?

Of course. We are upper class Brahmin Hindus. They talk shit about everyone, even their own kind.

But there are so many interracial marriages, they have tone it down a lot. It's still a big no-no to date or marry a Muslim.

Chinese are selfish, Malays are stupid and lazy, Indians are cunning and Caucasians are sex orientated.

My daddy seemed to have a thing against Mexicans, Indians, and Whites. Mexicans because he works in construction, so many of his co-workers are Mexican or of Latin descent. Why Indians, I have no clue. He said that both are "taking over America" in that Mexicans are taking the jobs and Indians are owning businesses. With Whites, it's the whole traditional perception that White people hate non-Whites, etc., etc. Then again, my daddy has something negative to say about his own people (Blacks). Actually, he has something negative to say about everyone.

My mama...she thinks racist or stereotypical things but it's not usual nor does she really voice them. She's not nearly as bad as my daddy though.

I still love my parents and they are not bad people, it's that their mentalities can be mean-spirited. They both have a habit of being very gossipy and negative. It has rubbed off on me and it took for college for me to notice it.

Once, I was talking so nastily about a person I hardly knew and I looked towards my friends to join in. They looked taken aback and very uncomfortable. I thought, "What's wrong? Why aren't y'all talking about her too?" It's when I realized that I was being an asshole and worse, I didn't even notice. Around my parents and sister, this is common conversation: gossiping about someone's clothes, hair, appearance, life, drama, etc. I thought everyone did this behavior because it's what I grew up around. It's something I'm still working on (people often say I'm mean and offensive when I just see it as being honest and necessary). I have to catch myself when the inner bitch wants to be unleashed. So yes, I do struggle with racist thoughts against every race.

Ironically, I have several Hispanic friends. Two Mexicans, two Puerto Ricans, two Blacks, one White, and two Black/White biracials. Had an Asian roommate if that counts.

We didn't really talk about them. I was just raised to have enough common sense and humanity to know that no particular race is inherently inferior or superior to any other.

Yeah it was brought up. But I think it was justified.

I remember I was about ten years old, I told my mother that I wanted to play junior hockey.

She then said, "The day you see a black hockey player, is the day I will pay for your uniform. Until then the answer is hell no."

:(

It's hot as hell and the dewing buds of red ratchets are blooming. It must be race-related thread season!

How were racial stereotypes expressed in your household? And do you believe in them now? Do you catch yourself joking about them or do the thoughts appear in your head sometimes?

In my household, my dad never really talked about anything more than sports so he was tuned out for the most part. My mother... She has her beliefs, many of which are from experience, other are passed down assumptions that she has heard from older family members and seen in the media. At one point, I would began to call her out on it and she would give me a look that was supposed to mean I was just ignorant and young. I have experienced life a little bit more since those days and my mind has not shifted. I don't know if she still believes the things she once did, but she doesn't say anything derogatory about people based on race anymore...for the most part.

I don't believe in ANY of the things that others would spew about other races. The thoughts do, however, appear when someone acts in accordance to my parent's beliefs.

My inspiration for this post was derived from the another thread on here that presented a chart that suggested that blacks were the least likely to get responses on OkCupid accounts. It made me wonder why black people are considered so unattractive around the world... was it all physical or something else?

My parents were a regular font of racial stereotypes..I don't think they believed many of them but they did enjoy repeating them and putting their own spin on them. For all the shit my parents talked, they've never,at least as far as I've ever seen, deliberately dicriminate against everyone..

As kids,we had black and Puerto Rican friends over all the time and we had fun talking smack on the different races.Same thing in the Army.I think it's something most people do in some form or another. As long as you just have fun with it and aren't mean about it,no harm,no foul..

For instance, according to my mom, dreadlocks were,''nigger knots.'' My dad would often declare that Hasidic Jews were ''a race of poor drivers.'' He had a name for everyone.Any black male was ''A Leroy." An Italian cruising in a Monte Carlo was ''Alphonse.'' Although,he cautioned about ever doing any crimes with an Italian as they couldn't be trusted to not rat you out.I have a brother in prison on the word of his Italian co-defendant ,so there may be some truth in that one. But,I'm pretty sure he'd still be there if the guy's name was Murphy. My brother,Rob is a career criminal, and to his way of thinking,if you commit 9 or 10 felonies a day and they only indict you for 5 or 6 every 5 years or so ,then you're still ahead of the game.

We were taught to keep an eye on street corner blacks and to never have your hands in your pocket when you walked by them, lest you get jumped and be unable to defend yourself.Good advise,I'd say.Especially if they were anything like my brother ,Rob.(they named him right ..lol)

All in all, half the shit they said about racial stereotypes was just that, shit. My mom especially was always talking shit about everybody though. She didn't have a whole lot of love for ''drunken,Irish bastards'' either.Even my sisters weren't off limits..With them it was ''they get laid, but I get fucked.'' My dad provides free legal aid to A.A. new comers .He helps anyone who needs his help, regardless their race..

They exist, but don't paint everybody with the same brush.

Racial stereotypes?

Uneducated people in poor conservative countries says western women are sluts/whores disgusted me.
Those countries mainly hide their bodies.
