The images are real.

The colours are added in after or else you wouldn't be able to see shit.


It's called colourmapping, and it's not done in Photoshop. Here's how it works:

1. The pixels in the image all have some level of black, from 0 to 100%. (it's actually stored in a different way, but you get the idea).

2. For each level, it passes through a mapping matrix and is transformed to RGB or CYMK colour.

3. Certain parts of the photo can be colourmapped separately.
 
I'm curious myself if Hubble and Spitzer could take photos in color? I understand the use of black and white so they can capture specific wavelengths, but I do not understand why it's necessary. Can the use of certain colored filters not do the same?

My Google searching has failed me at the moment. :(
 
Remember when we learned that Hubble was nearsighted and we had to send up a corrective lens so we could get better images.
