Not all of them are putting on an act. I have a friend that would probably get told he's putting on an act, but he acts the same way whether we're hanging out in public or just at his place.

I don't think you're trying to be rude, but isn't it harder to worry about why or for what reasons other people are gay? What if it IS for shock value for some like you say? Even if they're faking it, if it works for them and they are happy, it shouldn't bother you so much.
 
Agreed. You only think they're doing it for shock value or putting on an act. Why don't you ask them and when they tell you they aren't, you can enjoy the taste of your foot in your mouth.
