Hurricanes in the UK? What is this madness!?

London only showing winds 20 to 35 mph. Heck that's a breeze on the coast here in winter...Ulom up in yorks prolly won't even get 20mph.

We do still use mph. Today has just been breezy up here; currently 15mph, forecast to fall away to 4mph overnight and then peak at 20mph tomorrow. The worst is supposed to be (a) later tonight and tomorrow morning and (b) in the south. The BBC is, as ever, making the most of it.

Ok, so the wind currently isn't that strong, so I'm wondering whether it will truly happen! -_-

haha

Just checked London and one station reports CALM!!!!!!!!!

Hype hype hype...the only madness is the media and it's incessant hype of anything!!!!!!!

omg...the storm of the century!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

NOT

and folk on here criticised me for scoffing at this ...

ROFL

A storm doesn't even have to be tropical in order to be deadly.

Hope it's not anything like SAndy for you guys---they can be silent but deadly.

This is precisely my point.

Sandy wasn't a hurricane when it hit New Jersey, and in fact the National Hurricane Center didn't issue warning becuase it technically was not a storm with tropical characteristics. The eye had degraded and the storm drew its strength on cool core baroclinic conditions.

Very strong winds here in London. Neighbours tree has just come down. Will not be leaving for work for some time.

Well not a disaster, but a bit disruptive (trees blocking rail lines etc). 70 mph gust at Heathrow Airport, max recorded speed of 99 mph somewhere on the south coast. It's bright and sunny here now in SW London.

Live in London. Many time we get the remains of hurricanes after they come across the Atlantic. For those unaware it is not unusual to have high winds sometimes gusting to 80 MPH even with Sunny skies. Hello we are an Island in the Atlantic.

It is a nasty ocean. The West Pacific has even more tropical storms than the Caribbean.

At least you've got something to say when someone comments on the weather...
