I am booked in for my driving test.

i never understood what on earth is "complicated" with a manual gear shift. plus here you are not allowed to drive "manual" cars if you pass your driving test with a "automatic" one. and it can always happen in a job that you need to drive a "manual" car ..

anyway .. good luck. i was nervous as shit as well at my test .. but once i started driving, everything was fine :)

Automatic cars are more the norm over here than not, and I think it's a shame. I much prefer a manual shift car as I feel I have more control over it, especially in adverse conditions. I've always had automatic cars but when I bought my first brand new car two years ago I made sure it was a 5-speed manual.

Of course it becomes a monumental pain in the ass when there's a ton of traffic, but fortunately I rarely encounter traffic in my daily commute.
 
oh they are becoming more "normal" here in the last years as well. and yes .. in the city they are way more comfortable, and i can understand everybody who wants to drive one (although i don't prefer them ) - but limiting you ONLY to automatic shift cars doesn't seem to be the wisest things to do, especially when you job needs you to have a drivers license for whatever :) of course laws could be different over there, it was just intended as a general comment since i have often heard that "manual shift is sooo complicated" here as well (and don't understand it).

the weirdest thing that i ever drove in that bug is a "smart" with a semi-automatic. in the console a little signs starts to blink as soon as the car thinks you should shift gears. you don't need use the pedal though, just press the gear-shift upwards or downwards to change gears
 
In America there are no different licenses or certifications required to drive an automatic or manual shift passenger vehicle. Any old tosser can get behind the wheel of either type of car.

There are different licenses for bus drivers, truck drivers and motorcycles, though.
 
I passed... I thought I had failed because I was ridiculously nervous... but I got 98/100 so now I can drive a car by myself...
