Molson's "Joe Canadian" moves to U.S - actor Jeff Douglas, star of Molson beer commercials
AP--"Joe Canadian"--who made a name for himself last year ranting in a beer commercial that everything about America overshadows its neighbor to the north--has headed south.
Actor Jeff Douglas, star of Molson beer's popular Joe Canadian commercials, has left Canada for Los Angeles, and Canadians are not happy.
Douglas, 29, promises his move isn't permanent. Still, it's a slapshot in the face of Canadians, who took to heart his 30-second TV spot for Molson beer.
In the commercial, affectionately dubbed "The Rant," Douglas spews an exhaustive list of things Canadians might like to scream at Americans: "I'm not a lumberjack or a fur trader. I speak English and French, not American. And I pronounce it 'about', not 'a-boot'! Canada is the second largest land mass, the first nation or hockey and the best part of North America! My name is Joe, and I ... am ... CANADIAN!"
The commercial, an instant hit, took Douglas on a national tour of hockey rinks, where he Ranted during intermissions.
However happy Joe Canadian may be in Canada, Can Fallis, his Toronto agent, said, Jeff the actor is looking for more work. "Joe Canadian is so firmly knit into the Canadian fabric of society right now that people are upset," Fallis said, "but behind Joe Canadian is a real person with his own future to think of."
At Molson, a spokeswoman said Douglas may be gone but Joe lives on.
"Joe Canadian is in every and any Canadian," Michelle Robichaud said. "We're not losing our Joe."
