So.

As the result of a fall in the barnyard a couple of weeks ago, the bursa in my knee has just blown up and although there's nothing chipped or broken, it is not getting better even with physio every second day.

We are off to England in two weeks for a trip that will involve a lot of walking.

I think I may have to have the fluid drained off. My GP is reluctant to do this and he's a major jock, so he must have his reasons.

Has anyone else had this done and were you able to start running immediately after?

Yeah, I think you're pretty well fucked as far as doing a lot of walking in two weeks. Apart from the physio, if you're able to use the stationary bike, that would help in draining the fluids. Also high doses of arnica, if you're into herbal remedies.

Is it possible to alter the activities during your holidays, maybe use a bike instead of walking?

On your visit, I shall be your personal chauffeur!

If you're going anywhere near Windsor or the south coast, let me know. :D

I have a compression bandage on it and have warm compresses on it about 4 or 5 times a day.........the swelling has subsided twice, only to blow up again after any activity.

I may need some creamy complexioned young English 18 year old lads to be litter bearers.

Has anyone ever had the fluid drained off their knee before?

Yes.

Get it drained but don't run on it just walk. Get some Percocet as well for the trip. Take Ibuprofen too. You might want to get a steroid injection to boot.

Rareboy,
I am sorry. Probably the only thing will be in the short or long range to have a knee replacement. I know those work well, for my partner has had both done. But nothing will get it done for you in two weeks time. I wonder if you could possibly reschedule the England trip for next summer?

Truly farming is a dangerous work. Take care, and I hope it all works out for you.

Shep+(*8*)

I am reminded that this should read 'Bath' chairs.

I did something similar to my knee when I fell off a horse a few years ago. Physiotherapy did nothing and I declined a referral to an orthpaedic surgeon.

I took ibuprofen, wore an elasticated knee support and got on with things. Sure, it was swollen on and off for a while and painful if I moved awkwardly, but after a few months it was fine.

Come to England. Go walking but be sensible about what you do. If you need to rest, find a pub.

Umm...I've fluid drawn off my knee my family doctor. When I went to the orthopedist he wasn't happy about that. He said I needed the fluid to cushion the knee while it healed.

That's pretty funny!

Your orthopedist wasn't happy because your FP stole a (paying) procedure from him!

Your FP would not have drawn off the fluid if there had not been an excessive amount to begin with. In fact, he could not have done so. The normal amount of fluid is too small to tap.

You could be right. That orthopedist turned out to be not so good. When I hurt the other knee (I used to ski) I changed doctors.

I know you don't want to hear this, but cancel the trip, or at least cancel any parts that involve walking. Injuries to major joints can become life-long problems.

I have a rotator cuff injury. If I keep up the exercises, it usually isn't painful. Because I did not treat the problem promptly, I can look forward to pain for the rest of my life when I "overuse" my shoulder by doing things like vacuuming or putting up a tent. Odds are good I will re-injure it some day, and may need surgery. It also means that I am unable to do several common body-building exercises.

^I hate to say it, Rareboy, but Woofy's right; what you need now is rest and not additional burden for the knees. However, if you're going to be stubborn, then I suggest you walk using a crutch or a walking cane. That will reduce the amount of body weight burdened on the injured knee. For the pain, take ibuprofens; they can help relieve the pain albeit temporarily.

For arthrocentesis (joint fluid draining), you can read about it here:

I haven't had it done on me, but as far as I know, the indications are only for diagnostic properties, excessive joint fluid, and infectious arthritis. If you want to do this, discuss with an orthopedist instead.

^ thanks sweetie.

My mother was a great believer in these types of remedies and in fact, I often drink apple cider vinegar, baking powder and water for acid reflux.

I despair that there seems to be no reduction in swelling....when we go to Vermont this week, I will be carting with me the walking stick that my mother, her mother and my great-grandfather used.........old age and death come with a fall......Gabriel Garcia Marquez was right.
