It's just been one of those days... worked all night and havent slept yet

its By Bette Midler

I was walking down 42nd street one day

I wasn't workin'42nd street I was walkin 42nd street.

And this amazing thing happened to me. It was July it was about 89 degrees. It was hot, hot for New York, You know?

and I was walking east and this humungous person was coming west. And she had this big blue house dress on peppered all over with little white daisies. She was almost bald but sitting on top of her head,

forehead, you know

on her forehead

was this fried egg.

Which I thought was really unusual.

Because in New York City the ladies with the fried eggs on their heads don't generally come out until September or October you know. Here was this lady

this demented lady

with a little fried egg on her head in the middle of July.

God what a sight

and ever, ever since I saw that lady not one day goes by that I don't think of her and I say to myself

"Oh God, don't let me wake up tomorrow and want to put a fried egg on my head.

Oh God.

"Then I say real fast I say " Oh God, If by chance I should wind up with a fried egg on my head"

cause sometimes you can't help those things you know?

you can't!

I say to myself

"don't let anybody notice."

And then I say real fast after that

"if they do notice that I'm carrying something that, that's not quite right and they want to talk about it, let 'em talk about it

but don't let 'em talk so I can hear

I don't want to hear it."

Cause the truth about fried eggs

you can call it a fried egg

you can call it anything you like,

but everybody gets one,

some people wear 'em on the outside,

some people

they wear 'em

on the inside.

and then she finished with....

We had an apartment in the city.
Me and my husband liked living there.
It's been years since the kids have grown,
a life of their own, left us alone.

John and Linda live in Omaha.
Joe is somewhere on the road.
We lost Davy in the Korean war.
I still don't know what for, don't matter any more.

You know that old trees just grow stronger,
and old rivers grow wilder every day,
but old people, they just grow lonesome
waiting for someone to say,
"Hello in there. Hello"

Me and my husband, we don't talk much anymore.
He sits and stares through the backdoor screen.
And all the news just repeats itself
like some forgotten dream
that we've both seen.

Someday I'll go and call up Judy.
We worked together at the factory.
Ah, but what would I say when she asks what's new?
Say, "Nothing, what's with you?
Nothing much to do."

You know that old trees just grow stronger,
and old rivers grow wilder every day,
ah, but old people, they just grow lonesome
waiting for someone to say,
"Hello in There. Hello."

So if you're walking down the street sometime
and you should spot some hollow ancient eyes,
don't you pass them by and stare
as if you didn't care.
Say, "Hello in there. Hello."

You have just quoted one of my favorites of the Devine Miss "M". Although, when I really need a pick me up I will gravitate towards her Sophie Tucker jokes.

I am totally in awe of this woman, how she started in the Baths, and look at her now....

And one of the most touching of songs I have heard her sing-

A dream is a wish your heart makes
When you’re fast asleep
In dreams you will lose your heartache
Whatever you wish for you keep

Have faith in your dreams
And someday, your rainbow will come shining through
No matter how your heart is grieving
If you just keep believing
The dream that you wish will come true

A dream is a wish your heart makes
When you’re feeling small.
Alone in the night you whisper
Think no one can hear at all.
You wake with morning sunlight to find fortune that smile on you.
Don’t let your heart be filled with sorrow
For almost in tomorrow the dream you wish will come true.

The dream is a wish your heart makes
The dream is a wish your heart makes
You wake with the morning sunlight to find fortune that smile on you.
Don’t let your heart be filled with sorrow
For almost in tomorrow the dream you wish will come true.
No matter how your heart is grieving
If you just keep believing
The dream that you wish will come true

Nice post - thanks

Oh Andreus, I LOVE that song and I ADORE Bette Midler! I lost the live album recording some years ago (It was an audio cassette that I used to play over and over again .... lost it when we moved house about 10 years ago) and haven't yet found a replacement. Thank you, thank you, thank you for the memories! (*8*)

Melissa Manchester of "Don't Cry Out Loud" fame. LOVE her as well as the Divine Miss M.

Thanks for the post, haven't heard the monologue or song in years!

I love the routine and the song! Thanks for bringing it to mind. She's on the cd player now , thanks to you!!

Nice post, Andreus. "Hello in There" is a great John Prine song (Bonnie Raitt´s "Angel from Montgomery", etc.). I grew up with Joan Baez version. Your post brought back some memories. I had no idea there was a Bette Midler version.
I googled the song Pegasus69 posted. It´s "A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes", a song written for the Walt Disney film Cinderella (!!). Never saw Cinderella or heard the song before. Thanks Pegasus69!

I saw Bette do that number live back in the 70's at the (now-defunct and gone) Valley Forge Music Fair.

Here's one of my favorites from the closing credits of 'The Rose':

Some say love, it is a river
That drowns the tender reed.
Some say love, it is a razor
That leaves your soul to bleed.
Some say love, it is a hunger,
An endless aching need.
I say love, it is a flower,
And you it's only seed.
It's the heart, afraid of breaking,
That never learns to dance.
It's the dream, afraid of waking,
That never takes a chance.
It's the one who won't be taken,
Who cannot seem to give.
And the soul, afraid of dyin',
That never learns to live.
When the night has been too lonely,
And the road has been too long,
And you think that love is only
For the lucky and the strong,
Just remember in the winter
Far beneath the bitter snows,
Lies the seed, that with the sun's love,
In the spring becomes the rose.
Ya got ta have friends, guys!
