I can't recommend Windows to anyone

I'm still working on the mouse thing. There seems to be a bug report filed on it, so there may be an update to fix it very soon. In the meantime, if your mobo has a ps/2 port and you have an old ps/2 mouse, you might try that as a temporary solution. I understand it is only USB mice that are affected.

I'm still looking for a simple solution for that. Is this 32- or 64-bit Ubuntu?

As to the authentication problem, we need to find out what GPG key is not being retrieved.

Open a terminal session (Applications>Accessories>Terminal).

After the $, type sudo apt-get update

Enter your password.

Copy everything after the password line and paste it in this thread as a quote. (You can do it from Windows if you paste the text into Gedit and then save it as a .txt file to your Windows desktop. We are looking for a line that says "GPG error" near the beginning of the line. There may be more than one.)

To the OP.
Why dont you get yourself a reasonable computer maybe an I5 processor on an intel motherboard with 4gb ram with 500gb sata hard disk with 1gb screen card.

Then get yourself a reasonable copy of windows 7 eg Home Pro, Pro, Ultimate.

Install the windows 7 and i am sure it will work perfectly.

Not that it matters, but I have a 3 GHz quad-core AMD Phenom with 8 GB RAM and 2.5 TB of SATA hard drive storage. And no, Windows 7 does not run well on that system because it lacks important drivers (I have no sound and half the USB ports won't work in Windows 7). And I don't need anywhere near 1 GB of video RAM because I run Compiz Fusion, not Windows Aero.

I really don't care to spend hundreds of dollars for an OS when better alternatives are available free. I always find these recommendations by Windows people curious. "Just spend a few hundred dollars to upgrade your hardware and a few hundred dollars to buy Windows and a few hundred dollars for Office and some other programs, and you'll have something almost as good as what you've got now!"

SUGGESTION:

Get rid of your AMD whatever and get a real Intel Processor with Intel Motherboard. Get rid of your 8Gb ram cos windows 32bit cant see it anyway and change for 4Gb, buy wourself a decent screencard like i said earlier. Then load one of the Windows 7 32bit Versions (not 64bit) and everything will run like a dream.

And yes you really have to pay for professional stuff, it is only amateur half-cocked software that comes free with no backup, support or guarantee.

THOUGHT: I wonder why hundreds of millions of people all pay for their software when they can get better stuff for free. Maybe theyre just stupid and youre the clever one. Did you ever think of that!

Compiz Fusion - well I looked at it on youtube, and yes its very pretty but not needed at all to do your work on your computer, so dump it, and if you use windows, you can dump aero too cos you also wont need that to do your work.

Yes, I thought of that. Thank you.

Tens of millions of people (a majority) voted for George W. Bush.

Twice.

No question but that he was the best choice for president.

No way so many people could have been so stupid.

I'm not the clever one.

I voted for his opponent, both times.

so where is the thread with all the mac users complaining about their system?

they are busing downloading that new browser that supposedly can do .. err ... fake flash, because they don't need or want flash.

I have Windows 7 Ultimate running on all of my computers including my netbook (I could not deal with the Windows 7 Starter that they install on netbooks.) You do not need a jacked up computer to run Windows 7.

It sounds like your computer is somewhat older (pre Windows 7) and some of the drivers are conflicting with Windows 7. Not all of the manufacturers have updated their older drivers to Windows 7. Try getting updated drivers from the manufacturer of your computer. If you cannot get them from the manufacturer, try to get them directly from whoever made that component.

I dual boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.10, and I haven't had any problems with either.

I MUCH prefer to game on Windows 7 64-bit though, because games run much, much faster and completely stable.

I've got an Nvidia GeForce 295GTX video card, 12 GB of DDR3 RAM, an Asus P6T motherboard, and an Intel Core-i7 2.66 GHz chip. I have my OS's installed on a 10,000 RPM hard drive. It makes a big difference.

My computer's over a year old and stuff runs insanely fast on it. Windows 7 boots in 11 seconds from the time I press my power button. Ubuntu takes a little longer but not much.

I have to hand it to Microsoft though, they do make some programs that are worth it. Visual Studio is one of those.

Doing this will list which chipsets your machine uses. We can then Google around for solutions to whichever problems your PC is having.

Thank you.

I gave up on Linux after six years of really trying hard. It isn't the platform --that's OK--, but the lack of polished, feature-packed software.

OpenOffice is not as good as Microsoft Office (I rely on spreadsheets quite often for my career choice and Calc is just not up to the task, and Impress is a joke.), and even early versions of Illustrator and Photoshop (from the OS 9/Windows 98 era) beat the s*** out of Inkscape and GIMP. If there was decent productivity software for Linux, then I'd be pretty happy with it. However, the way things look now, I can only use it for Internet, e-mail and IM and have to keep Windows or OS X around at all times.

I own two computers, a (somewhat old) laptop running Windows 7 and a blue and white Power Macintosh G3 running Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger. While Windows 7 is certainly better than XP, I still find myself more often using the 11-year-old Mac than the much more modern PC -- I'm much more comfortable with the Mac OS than with Windows. If I only had enough money to upgrade to something Snow Leopard-capable...

I thought Windows 98 was the best OS ever after that windows started going downhill.

Vista and Xp does more freezing then anything now i see why people use cell phones ipods ipads etc full time.

I have a laptop with Windows 7 on it and its pretty stable

I would love to have a mac but they cost too much even used ones

If you don't like OpenOffice, you might look into Lotus Symphony for Linux. It is a word processor, spreadsheet, and presentation suite for Linux (and also Windows and Mac) from IBM. It is free (although you need to register an email with IBM).

so where is the thread with all the mac users complaining about their system?

Shhhh!

The unspoken assumption is that we can't even get online... :D

Though I did manage to get SheepShaver running with OS8.6 installed in it and can play Myst again - WTF, it's giving me more satisfaction than Myst Revelation.. I've hit a brick wall there.. ](*,)

I did. But it's the same core (OOo 1.4 in Symphony 1.x, OOo 3.0 in Symphony 3.x) It's just OpenOffice with a nice Eclipse-made UI. It doesn't address any of my complaints about OpenOffice. It's the same as using an IE shell as opposed to "real" Internet Explorer...
