  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

I don't understand gays liking Kathy Griffin.

So I read the first two pages of this blah thread and someone needs a lesson in Comedy 101.

Humor is always at the expense of something or someone. Whether it's an individual, a group of people, animals, companies or w/e. If you don't get that, go become a hermit because nobody likes a humorless person.

Obviously there are different styles in comedy. Some people laugh when a man gets hit in the groin with a football and falls down into a fetal position grabbing his crotch in agony. Others will laugh at a racist, sexist or another derogatory joke. Others may laugh at something that hypocritical, ironic or satirical. People have different tastes and you should respect that, even if you don't find it funny.

Finally, if you are offended by something comedic, don't bother listening, reading or watching it. Nobody likes to hear a whiney bitch complain about something they don't like. There is a time and place to complain and this is not one of them.

So you don't like/get Kathy Griffin. Okay, that's fine. There was no need to start a thread that probably should have ended right after I stopped reading page 2. My rant is over.

Kathy Griffin can be quite funny at times. I like her deadpan delivery. Sure, some of the humor is slightly offensive, but what comedian isn't nowadays? Just take it in stride, and have a laugh, it's more fun that way.

Comedy is a difficult trade in which to employ oneself. I have seen Kathy Griffin live and already have tickets to her show this fall in DC. I have also seen Margaret Cho, George Carlin and Rodney Dangerfield and have been fans of each from time to time.

As George Carlin got older (and I think I saw one of his last shows here in DC)...I didn't find him as funny and he was almost acidic -- he came across as almost angry. In his early years, I laughed my butt off when I saw his schtick.

Rodney (and I'll try not to date myself too much) was funny not so much in what he said but in his delivery. There were comedians that had perfect delivery of the lines -- he was one. Another who carried it over into acting was Lucille Ball.

In looking at comedians like the Three Stooges or Marx Brothers, many might find their actions questionable -- they were actually almost violent. It was the delivery and accompanying actions that were humorous.

Some may find Kathy Griffin unamusing and I respect their viewpoint. I enjoy Polish jokes (and I am Polish) while others may find them offensive. If I know it offends someone, I wouldn't repeat a joke but if I'm paying to go see someone or something, I guess I'll have done some homework and expect to be entertained; otherwise I'll simply turn the channel on TV or choose to not watch them.

I, personally, am offended by comedians whose only claim to "funny" is spewing forth obscene words; like I'm supposed to be amused when I hear "fuck" for the 50th time. I'm not. I find such comedians disgusting and would not pay to see them. That's just my taste and the buttons that make me laugh. It appears from this thread that we are not all alike -- thank god. Otherwise the gay world would be a pretty damn boring place! It is our diversity; what we each think and what we each believe that makes us....well...to not sound or be self-effacing...like the rainbow with differences that make the total beautiful. Respecting those differences is what should set us apart.....

If that's the case (which I'm not agreeing that it is) then why did you bother making this thread? You already know the answer to your own question.

I came to that conclusion after reading the responses to this thread.

What's interesting is that, since you couldn't convince anyone of your opinion on the merits, you resorted to doing exactly what you accused Kathy of: insulting gay people. You thought, if you accused her fans of being "effeminate" or "thinking like women", they'd feel bad in some way. How masculine or feminine someone is matters not at all to me or most people here, and most men would profit greatly by thinking a little more like women.

And by the way, many of her gay fans are "bears." I'd like you to tell them to their face that they're effeminate.

Some people like Coke, others prefer Pepsi. I like iced tea.
Everybody doesn't have to like everything. Just because I'm gay doesn't mean I can be lumped in with every other gay person and you know what I like or don't like.

YOU don't like Kathy Griffin. I do. Do I like her because I'm gay? I don't think so. Her comedy is really more about celebrity gossip than anything else. She tends to tell stories about her dealings with celebrities. If that's not your thing - that's not your thing. She's gay friendly. She does have a large gay following and she acknowledges it. How DARE she?

That doesn't even make any sense. You were obviously already familiar with her brand of comedy, enough that you watched her television show. How you could've JUST now come to that conclusion after reading a few pages, I'm really not sure.

Bingo! Get that man a prize! :=D:

For the life of me, BDH, I just can't imagine why you find it so hard to get others to agree with you on here. Surely the winning personality you've shown in this thread would win over everyone you meet.

I haven't really payed attention to her for awhile, but yesterday I went on a Kathy Griffin marathon on youtube (inspired by this thread). By the end, I was exhausted... too much laughing.
She really is crazy. And you cant take her seriously, cuz she talks shit about everyone, even her mom. But aside from how funny she is, her stories are interesting. Shes a good story teller.

I watched her stand up. She never made me laugh once, but her jokes disgusted me, I'll tell you that.

How so?

I'm just curious, because I know Kathy Griffin personally. There seems to be a different reaction here than on other boards where I've discussed the same topic.

Wait, you know her "personally", yet you think she is homophobic...WHAT?!?!

Now you are making no sense. Half of us have only see her perfom or her television show, and we know she isn't homophobic, and everything she says is in jest.
