I quit smoking -- cold turkey -- over four years ago ... this after many failed attempts ... and yes it is true, quitting for good will stick at some point which is why it's so important not to give up. You're smart to also stay away from alcohol at the same time. For me, drinking was a trigger and staying away from that too helped a lot.
At this point, just recalling the smell of smoke gets me nauseous. Now I can go into a bar and drink without worrying about it. You'll be surprised in a few months how well your body will start to rebound also.
It takes time and willpower, but you can do it. Many have quit cold like me.
