  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

I hate being called 'Hun' by a store clerk

Hun-haters stay out of Maryland, esp. Baltimore. Hun is the universal form of address by waitresses, receptionists, etc., around here.

I kinda like it. It goes well with crabcakes and beer.

Less well with poutine and Timbits.

It's habitual, not purposeful.

All you can do is ask(respectfully), and all you can hope is that she remembers the next time.

Have a few co-workers that call customers different endearing names - I can understand things like baby, doll and other such "date-play" names being a bit much, but i'm bias; I'm in the South and I work at a grocery store. I hear it all the time and I shrug it off as monotonous friendliness at work.

It's spelled hon, hon!

I like it. It sounds friendly.

stay out of baltimore - we have had a spray paint war for decades - every time the city covers up the "graffiti" someone immediately goes back to the big "welcome to baltimore" sign on I-95 at the entrance of the city and adds "HON" -

sounds like ur being petty if not just a prude - I call straight men "babe" all the time - never once has it been taken derrogatively - everyone in the state of maryland gets called HON a dozen times a day - maryland - one of the richest and most affluent states in the country - maryland has more billionaires than ANY state in the nation - they rank in the top five of wealthiest states - and no one takes offense to being called HON there - get over yourself -

has this guy never been to a diner in his life ?????

I've been called that a few times or "sugar" in the south.

Darling, you need need to settle down. Now seriously sweetie, that dear woman was just trying to be friendly towards you.

Really though I don't mind when people say that stuff to me. I much prefer it then when people call me faggot or fruit etc.

You think that's bad try having some one call you boss.

Me: Can I have paper instead of plastic?

Clerk: Sure thing boss.

Me: Can I have mild hot sauce with that?

Guy at window: No problem boss, there you go.

I dont mind any term of affection that is said by cashiers/waitresses/whatever. I would much rather affection than apathy from disinterested and rude workers who don't say a word to you, or who spend the whole time talking to another colleague and don't acknowledge your existence.

Really I think it's quite sad that people don't like terms of endearment. I remember reading that public workers could be in trouble of sexual harassment suits if they called people "love". Ridiculous.

There are two regular customers I get who stand out for their petnames. One woman uses every name under the sun during each transaction that lasts less than half a minute. In that time she'll get in a "sweetie", "honey", "darling", "my love" and "angel" (that one threw me the first time she said it!

That's the other one, but only from one guy who is a couple years older than me. Older guys call me boss which I don't mind, but it sounds weird coming from a guy around my age.

Come to Yorkshire and the shop assistants will call you "luv" instead. Go to Newcastle and it's "pet". I wouldn't get hung up on it if I were you.
The other day when we were doing some last minute Christmas shopping here in Shrewsbury, several checkout assistants at different stores called me darlin'. Not sure if this is the norm here but I liked it and it made me smile.

Call me pet, hun, luv, lovey, sweety, darlin', mate, if you like ... doesn't bother me one little bit! ..|

Really? Life is hard for some people. I always use the term "mate." Is that too personal? I mean, even if I don't know them, it's "thanks mate," "excuse me, mate," etc.

Get a lot of the pet names (honey, sweety, deary) from people I don't know. Life's horrible!

I hate it when dumb jocks call me "brah".

yeah i cringe every time i'm called "bro" or "dog" or w/e they're saying now

but omg @ this thread :

Currently, it is still "brah" and "no homo". Very rampant in the gym I work out in.

I had never heard this whole "bra" thing until that idiotic "Dog the bounty hunter" show. I didn't understand why grown men would refer to each other by the common name of a woman's undergarment. Why not "Yo Panties, what's new?" or even "Hey Garter! How's it going?"

I hate when people address me as 'sir,' though. I've been raised to address my elders, or those I'm being formal to, saying, "yes, ma'am" or "yes, sir." It's just how I am. But when people say, "yes sir" to me, I die a little inside. xD I don't correct them, though.

You could say "Don't call me sir, I work for a living." (Leroy Jethro Gibbs, NCIS)

Does anyone else use that term?

I wouldn't complain about pet names, unless it's "faggot" ..|

I was about to post that until I saw your post.

GSDX, if this is the only thing that you have to complain about; your life is doing really well. Or, you need a freaking life.

Let us know if she calls you a 'fucking faggot'. Then, I would suggest to complain to management.

This was an asshole comment when Beachguyj made it and it's an asshole comment now.
