  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

I have a question

I find it hard to believe that anyone would think that just because someone is deaf they are also dumb. What are we in, 1910? But then I can't understand why people are against repealing DADT or gay marriage -- so I guess there are a lot of ignorant people out there.

Don’t ask me how I know this, but ‘deaf’ is sometimes used as slang for ‘defecate’ in the scat (poop) fetish community.

So, I just assumed you were a Satanic Furry with a scat fetish.

Did you ever see the video of Horny Hazed with the two deaf brothers? They use a lot of sign language and I wished I could understand it. The camera man translated as best he could, but I know I missed a lot.

I did learn how to say 'gay' and 'lesbian' from that episode, though, so... go me. :)

LOL, really, wow.. I have never see that video, if ya have link to it, i wana see it:wave:

...a boss of the store refuse to hire me cuz he think i was dumb. i think it gotta do with that deaf people cannot hear words, cannot read books, cannot do thing the way hearing people do. that is the problem. so that why they automation believe that all of us are dumb, mute

I assume that you can read books if you can type your thoughts in words. Right?

Hey, if you didn't want to see the gargoyle dance, you should've just said so.

hu? why would people assume that? i mean there are some weird stereotypes out there, but why should people that just can't hear be stupid? people must be pretty stupid to believe that
or maybe i am just out of the loop because I had a deaf childhood friend ..

Happens all the time. People are always equating physical disabilities with mental impairment.

Actually, I always thought that old saying "deaf and dumb" meant that the person couldn't hear and couldn't talk. But I'm probably wrong.

It used to. (Witness "Pinball Wizard" by the Who, where that "deaf dumb and blind kid sure plays a mean pinball".) But the phrase has been out of favor for quite some time.

...random we both used the term "out of favor". :)

Deaf does not equal dumb. It just means you need to communicate in a different way, and we need to communicate with you in a different way.

Many many years ago when I was a child I had a friend, she lives in the white house on the corner of my block. She was deaf, and I remember learning some sign language. But alas my family moved away, and thats all I remember of that time.

Personally and this is just me I never understood why anyone equated the word dumb with the inability to speak.

Handicaps doesn't make people dumb. In other words: you're not dumb (*8*)

Same here, the word deaf and dumb are totally different thing. Back then, my deaf school used to be call Alabama school for the deaf and dumb, they now changed it, dumped the dumb

I still can sign a bit .. but over the years I forgot A LOT. Still sometimes funny when I can understand parts of the conversation that other people have for example at the train station .. usually they just assume they are amongst each other, so it's extra fun if I see them bad mouthing a person that I see as well
