Laugh away. I saw this rack at a thrift store a few years ago. Came across it just now in a back closet in the basement as I was gathering a few cool things to take to a friend's children at a dinner Saturday evening.

I know it's a rack, but I just cannot imagine for what.

On a wall, if the four feet fit within a bracket, it might be for aprons in a commercial kitchen, or something.

Standing on its feet, it would make an arch, but the holes are not big enough for umbrellas, plus it doesn't weigh enough to counterbalance them.

Ideas?

That doesn't seem likely, as it wouldn't be an arch, in order to be used on two sides, and as an arch, the low ends wouldn't be tall enough for a mug to clear beneath each hoop/stem. It also wouldn't be likely to be an arch on a kitchen counter.

The arch must be for some purpose other than aesthetics.

I will say the design of it is almost institutional looking, like seeing kitchen equipment, as it isn't really as aesthetic as practical, and it is heavy metal and the soldering is a bit crude. The ornamentation beneath the arch is more rudimentary, like a belt rack or towel rack or pot rack.
 
The arch looks as if it is intended to support something more than hang things, like a dress form, corset, or some form. The wings and the rack itself are strong, as if to bear weight.
 
The "feet" appear to be at the wrong angle and the wrong shape to take screws and allow the object to be fixed to a wall. I assume it's therefore intended to be freestanding. I wondered whether it might be for supporting a cloth over a freshly baked cake to keep flies or whatever off, but the curly bits underneath would then be unnecessary and possibly be in the way.
 
It truly is one of the strangest things I've ever found that is not mechanical. The feet having upturned ends, but not finished, yet the whole thing is nickel plated steel, implies a hard-wearing rack or support, institutional grade, and designed to either resist corrosion from gettitng wet, or to resist scratching.

The ribs being on both sides would seem to prove it was not meant to be wall mounted (with brackets (missing) that would receive and hold the feet. If it were, the ribs and loops standing up would not work the same facing down (as if in an apron rack).

I've also wondered if the loops are not the receivers for handles or poles, but simply as holders to keep things contained between the loops, but that would be something wide enough to be held between loops.

If it is a shoe rack, then it is fanciful as an arch, It being two sided is somehow important. Also, the fact that it is freestanding, not meant to be affixed is also a clue.

I love a mystery.
 
I wonder if it might be for some use in a salon, sauna, or spa, where things like rolled towels, or terrycloth slippers, etc., might be in a rack for use by patrons, hence the nickel. The arch would again be for display to simply make a utilitarian rack more fru-frued, like a day spa might do.
 
Getting back to a kitchen use, wouldn't it be funny if it were a bakery's baguette stand?

Funny, but when I first saw the loops, my brain went there too, trying to imagine it as a tool holder. The arch does imply that it holds something of graduated sizes.

The weight and finish just don't make sense for casual home use, as manufacturer's don't make things of heavy steel when aluminum will do, or thinner gage stock, and they sure don't nickel-plate things that don't need it.
 
a reverse image search brings up a whole plethora of items ranging from wine racks to bottle racks to jewelry holder; so many things that didn't really look like your item that I finally decided that the internet doesn't know anything :rotflmao:

It is hard to find it by entering a description. If only it had a maker's mark or any numer or identification on it, but it doesn't. Google just ignores whatever key words you enter in description and just floods you with stuff not meeting the description.

I think it was Miss Manners who had this helpful suggestion about one Gentle Reader's question about how to use some item. You own the item, and thus it serves the purpose you want it to serve!

The problem with it being side mounted is the "feet" would need to attach via separate hardware, which would seem incongruous with the general design that is not particularly aesthetic, so removing brackets or screw holes doesn't make sense.

And, the greater problem is the loops face up and down if wall-mounted. Facing down, they don't work,, and if a pot rack, facing up doesn't.

I truly hope someone stumbles across this and recognizes it by function if not the specific item.
