I know I shouldn't be, but I'm now genuinely scared of a Trump presidency

Last week we turned our clocks back one hour yesterday we move the country back to the 18th. century.

You would think a businessman, especially of the bloodsucking capitalist type, would recognize that budgets have to be balanced and that means increasing revenues, not decreasing them. When corporations have captive customers, they charge everything they can get away with; taxpayers are most definitely captive, so why wouldn't a businessman do the same for the sake of the country?

Unfortunately he seems to have joined the mythology on the right that has turned the idea of using tax cuts to stimulate the economy under the 'right' conditions and turned it into a magical fetish that they think cures all economic ills.

The fact that many people are totally unable to understand this concept is why the UK is struggling to deal with the recent influx.

Most of the people coming here seem to be economic migrants; they want to be here for better prospects. Fair enough, but they should be treated just the same as any other person who wants to make a life here instead of allowing them to play the 'refugee-card' for preferential treatment.

But, they are mostly fit young men; there appears to be an almost total absence of women, children, and elderly which would be expected of people fleeing a country through lack of choice. We seem to have very few genuine refugees coming in recently and those that do have travelled through safe countries to get here. They could have/should have claimed asylum there first.

A refugee is only a refugee once they leave their homeland in fear of persecution and reach the FIRST safe haven who accepts them. Once they leave that safe country in search of better prospects, they ae no longer refugees but immigrants.

If the US accepts them as refugees, they receive welfare for a period of years, so of course many claim to be refugees and stupid old Uncle Sam lets them get away with it.

We also regard economic freedom, including low taxation, to be a very important civil rights question. A heavily taxed people are not a free people. "Progressive" taxation and total taxation of inheritance were list by Marx as an element of Communism.

You talk about low taxation like you're some high falutin millionaire, which you're not. I highly doubt that you are anywhere near the top tax brackets even if you are a lawyer (doubt that). So please spare us, you are not suffering from taxes.

The democratic media literally creamed their pants when Trump did not concede to accept a Hillary win, and the press went nuts reporting it. Turn on your news channel now and see who is refusing to accept democracy. Protests in every major city. Oh the irony. #-o

They're tolerant and accepting of all ideologies, and they're peaceful and progressive.... until they don't get their own way.

It's simple that should Trump enact his infrastructure programme funding must be provided. Republicans have a well established track record for not reducing defence expenditure. The only other source of funding is taxation, or a cut back on social spending that will "hurt" the very demographic that has elected him into office.

Labelling an immigrant/refugee is a distraction.

Please bear in mind that service industries rely upon low cost immigrants to work for a pittance. With a five percent national unemployment rate clearly there are jobs for those willing to work for a low salary....with recent immigrants eager to work to guarantee their future living in the USA. For this reason immigrants are popular with employers anxious to keep their labour costs under control.

Yes, we should be tolerant and accepting of hatemongers. Those "ideologies" have always helped people when we accepted them.

And this is a funny criticism considering the vast majority of people who didn't like Obama trashed him for both of his terms. Yet people are coming out of the would work and telling us just accept Trump? It is a joke. Considering the same people say "freedom of speech and expression" is being squelched, but when others express their speech and expression that disagrees with their point of view, they criticize it as a not accepting of others opinions.

Hypocrisy at its finest.

While rejecting all acts of violence, and destruction of property I would dread a time would arrive when Americans were denied their birth right to express their joys, or their desperation in the public domain.

Democratic traditions should include ones right to express satisfaction in public (as many of Trump's supporters have done) or dissatisfaction in public (as HRCs supporters have done).

Let's not forget emergency agencies were bracing for riots, gun attacks and street violence in the event Trump lost.

Taxation is an extremely poor measure of freedom.
Countries that have single digit tax takes as a percentage of GDP have uniformly poor human rights records and freedoms.
Haiti anyone? Angola? Burma?

By Ben's logic there'd be more successful business startups in Chad than France - a truer measure of economic freedom. The extreme reverse is true.

A developed country needs a certain amount to function, and nowhere spends as much as the USA on defence.

Freedom benefits all, not only the rich. By your reasoning, only gays should want rights for gays, only blacks should be concerned about their freedom etc.

I agree, we shouldn't tolerate hate, no matter what side it comes from.

Much of that is correct and it explains how immigration keeps wages low. But many are not willing to work for low salaries.
Nearly a hundred million are no longer working. The unemployment among young black men is the highest in the country, and many are not looking. With welfare available, the marginal difference in income between working and not working in not sufficient to lure them into the labor market. For many, competing with immigrants for low wages seems uncool. http://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2016/06/the-missing-men/488858/

^While being aware that a welfare system can generate a wilful indifference, or inertia to carry out low paid work, in many Northern European countries there are incentive schemes encouraging the " work shy" to work by threatening to stop welfare benefits.

I am not insensitive to the arguments that you raise here, but also understand that the United States can learn from similar experiences in other countries how best to remedy those matters that you raise for our consideration.
