I lost important e-mails recently.

How do i avoid this in the future?

They were saved.

I would also routinely re-send them to myself.

What email do you use? Outlook, gmail,

Google 'how to back up your email'

Use the Import and export wizard to back it up (if that's the case) and then burn onto a DVD

I made a tutorial for Outlook Express (for anyone out there who uses it)

2 easy solutions for the future..... 1) copy them to a save folder or, even better copy them as docs (word, text, whatever is best for the type of info in the email) and save them to your hard drive/backup drive and/or 2) print them out and keep them in a folder or some other location where you'll know where they are.

As for the ones you've already lost...... How did you lose them?

This happened to an AOL account.

It was accessed after being inactive.

Everything was gone.

I want to save them in a way where they can't be accussed of being tampered with.

Create a folder and move them there, My Yahoo email has about 50 folders where I save important emails.

Also forward them to another email and save them in a folder on that email account too,.

Copy the email and save it on an external drive or one of those free cloud services.

Printing emails out wont help. Someone can say you photoshopped the email and then printed it out.

I would record it on video as it appears on the monitor. If its that important and you want to show it hasn't been tampered with, you would have to record it onto video.

Ditch AOL. Also stay away from Yahoo e-mail- they're constantly hacked as well. I've had very few problems with Gmail.

You might find some helpful suggestions at AOL Help

IMPORTANT: Free AOL Mail accounts that aren't used for more than 120 days are deleted.

Sorry, I realized you can't photoshop a document unless a capture was taken of it. (Blond moment)

How long was your account inactive? Because it sounds more like they were purged than lost. That's usually what happens with inactive accounts. IS this for some potential court situation? Because if you want to use them for evidence in a court hearing you'll need them as printouts anyway. But I'd recommend keeping them as a transcript with message and responses all as one. That way the court can look at it all and be able to clearly tell whether it was or wasn't tampered with

The problem with that is they can still try to claim it was photoshopped and recorded. The best bet is to keep the message/responses together along with date and timestamps. Those can be confirmed through ISP providers if/when necessary.
