In 1977 I was 16 and he changed my little world forever, opening endless doors. In 1983 time stood still as we talked on the phone for 64 seconds. In 2016 he died of liver cancer, two days after he turned 69 and released his masterpiece, Blackstar. This photo was taken only weeks before his death. He knew it was inevitable. He was in pain. He’s teaching us something here. I made a David Bowie gif last night.

David Bowie was one of the most remarkable men who ever lived. He was an enigmatic genius who always endeavored to make his music ever fresh, ever vibrant. Blackstar, like his other works, is original and puzzles and intrigues-- something new in the world of popular music where stars routinely release offerings which are essentially stale versions of the work that made them famous 50 years ago. There will never be anyone quite like Bowie. RIP

... and he was the ONLY one who took (his) music from the sixties and BUILT on it during the seventies and eighties.
The Beatles were history.
The Stones reverted to traditional blues and rock and roll.

Who else WAS there ?

I was about 10 when this older girl down the street lent me her copy of Aladdin Sane. I was a little young to appreciate all the themes within, but I think I got the general idea. It changed my life. Some time later she lent me Lou Reed's Transformer. "Don't let your parents see it!" She cautioned. I wasn't effeminate or anything, but I think somehow she knew. Those two albums were some of the best education I got.

I love your story. Education is exactly what those particular albums deliver to those fortunate enough to receive it. A side note: Bowie, as you probably know, produced Transformer. In at least one of Lou Reed’s interviews the man absolutely rhapsodizes discussing Bowie’s back up vocals on “Satellite of Love,” and it’s a beautiful moment because Reed wasn’t prone to elaborate praise. And of course he’s correct; Bowie’s vocals on that track are heavenly.
Thanks for sharing!
